Visibly agitated and flustered, Emery had to sit down; but where? He was standing on a busy street corner filled with people. Looking around, he quickly spotted a public bench. With eyes fixated on his smartphone, he blindly walked over, rudely cutting through pedestrians, and sat down.
There must be some mistake. He carefully checked the appointments and to his horror, it was true. He missed the iTrip interview.
"How can this happen?" he gasped. Emery's heart sank, his shoulders drooped, and boiled up anger coursed through his veins. He looked around, wanting to throw this smartphone right through the storefront window of a nearby pottery boutique.
"How could a mix-up like this happen?" he muttered again, aloud. This client was supposed to be his big break; his moment of coming out. All coming apart with the embarrassment of double booking.
He wanted to blame someone, or something but couldn't. He had no staff - he was it! That's what made it so frustrating; this bungle was all his fault. He took several deep breaths and tried to relax; tried to re-focus; looked down at the joints in the walk.
He checked his email; his hope delated - no messages from the client. "I’m done," he muttered. Or was he? Can this be salvaged? He needed to be more positive.
"Pray," came an inner thought, causing him to lurch; astonished at the sharp, direct tone.
"Why not," Emery muttered with resignation. Worst case, he would lose the deal; suffer the embarrassment for botching up a high profile client and start all over. Emery closed his eyes and buried his head in his hands.
"Lord Jesus, I need your help," he whispered. "I feel so awful, so incompetent."
Emery left a high paying job going off on his own. He knew it would take time getting established. He was good at his profession; at what he did. Still, he worked so hard to get this far with iTrip; he couldn't bear the thought of losing this client.
"It's not fair," he continued. Realizing the self-pity he was slipping into; Emery shifted on the bench and let out a deep breath.
"God, I'm sorry for my anger, and my disappointment. I give it to you. I give this business to You. I'm sorry for trying to make this work on my own." Those words of humble resignation flowed out of his heart, instantly, like a stream of water. He felt better. He exhaled and sat up. There was someone standing in front of him.
"Emery?" the person asked. "Is everything okay?"
Emery's eyes refocused.
"I’m fine,” Emery responded, looking cautiously at the stranger. He recognized that voice; Emery slowly stood up, extending his right hand.
“Dale? Dale Knight," Emery said with a grin. "How long has it been?"
The two men gripped each other with a firm business handshake; paused, made direct eye contact; then both embraced. Both men laughed and sat down on the bench.
"Sorry," said Emery. "I'm having a hard morning, just missed a make-or-break presentation with a prospective client."
Knight made a wincing face. "That's too bad. What are you doing these days?"
"I left S&S a couple of months ago; now I'm on my own."
"Wow! Doing what?"
Emery explained to Knight his consulting business, and how he missed today's meeting with iTrip. Knight glanced at him and interrupted, "Did you say iTrip?"
Emery nodded and continued talking. Knight waved his hands interrupting Emery again.
"Okay, your THAT consultant," Knight said with a knowing grin.
"What do you mean?"
"I'm an exec at iTrip now and was on my way to that meeting. It got cancelled. Two of our execs couldn't make it. Didn't anyone contact you?"
Emery slowly shook his head all the while letting out a huge sigh of relief; colour slowly coming back to his face.
"I'm terribly sorry about that," apologized Knight. "We'll have to reschedule; we're very interested in what you have to offer. Look I've got to run, this is too funny running into you like this," chuckling as he quickly stood up, waved and ran off.
Emery was stunned speechless; amazed at how God worked this matter out.
