God’s Present
In the beginning…what’s wonderful about these three little words, as most everyone knows, is that first they describe something really big, beautiful and successful that happened and God did all the work. He took all the responsibility to bring forth everything man and beast needed for life and living. He planned it, spoke it, brought it forth, shaped it, commanded it and finished it.
The sad part is, God instructed man to ‘take over’, and he failed, so man had to ‘start over’. That’s the world we were born into. One with a lot of endings.
So even though “the beginning” marks God’s awesome work and the world’s opening scene, at some point there has to be ‘a beginning’ for me and you, and it doesn’t start in a beautiful, perfect unstained garden.
Its hard thinking about the things we are responsible for now. The places we start out, toiling and laboring for bread. Always toiling and laboring.
There are so many things we need to sow, and cultivate, prepare and choose. It can be overwhelming and downright frightening, because, unlike God, we can’t always see in front of us, and we don’t know how our work will turn out. Will we fail, will we succeed, and will we finish strong or will we have to start over?
But there is one more reality which swings us back into the good part of the beginning. God is there. In the Beginning God…He was and is. After Adam and Eve left paradise she gave birth to Cain, and said, “With the help of the Lord, I have gotten a man-child. And in the course of time Cain brought an offering to the Lord, and Abel also brought an offering of his flock.” Genesis 4:2-4 (NAS) God was there! He didn’t stay behind, in the beginning, in the lovely garden with perfection. He went with them into the dusty earth.
He has not left us either in the beginning and he will not abandon us in the end. He does not stay back while we move ahead into the unknown. He is there helping us, accepting us, speaking to us and guiding us. He shows us in the word, and in our day to day lives- he is with us at the beginning of each day, each moment, each difficult conversation, each new project, and each new life. He is there, like the sun, giving light and life to the world he made and owns, he is still taking responsibility for his creation and working all things together for our good.
He is with us, through the Holy Spirit, through his word, through his Son, in the drought and famine, darkness and provisions. From the light to the firmament, from vegetation to the turning of seasons, from beast to man and from paradise to earth; God is present. Each new day is a reminder that God is still here, and giving us an opportunity to start over. So be encouraged, even when things feel like they are a ruinous failure, it may be just the beginning of a whole new life.

7 Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
9 If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

and your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you.
