FOOD is quickly associated in my mind with the mention of delicious. That which I define as good, has been conditioned by the cultural normative foods that I grew up eating. These are classed as primarily “comfort foods”. Childhood is when we form the definition of what is good and tasty! Foods are then ranked based on this foundation standard.
TASTE is a determining factor that ranks what is delicious. Each experience with a new or classic food dish will be compared using this standard. This includes what I have been introduced to via restaurants, friendships and co-workers.
DELIGHT, is the main feeling that is involved when tasting food. Delight can also occur in the preparing of food. A memorable moment is created. It becomes etched into my mind. Recalled often at social gatherings when I eat the food.
SHARING these dishes with others becomes an activity motivated by a desire to apportion others in the delicacy of appraising foods. My mouth begins to water when thinking about these foods.
THIRST is a sign that anticipation is building with each word read. Are you savoring in your mind? So far in this article; there are no visual images or word pictures of foods. Nor are there any aromas or flavors described. I have yet to name or describe to you any food dish. Are you hooked into finding out what is next? Since you are; I will not disappoint you!
In our daily reality we seldom engage our internal spirit. Often our thoughts have compartmentalized aside our inner spirit. The mention of food as topic takes us back to our childhood mode of free association of body mind and spirit. As food is nourishment for our body; so is personal daily reading of the scriptures is nourishment for our internal spirit.
DELIGHT in the experience of feeding your soul with spiritual manna from heaven. John 6:35 says Jesus replied to them, “[a] I am the Bread of Life. The one who comes to Me will never be hungry, and the one who believes in Me [as Savior] will never be thirsty [for that one will be sustained spiritually].
The writer of these passages in scripture demonstrates their full spiritual participation which results in experiencing delight. The bodily senses, emotions, and mind are involved and associate the experiences collectively. So as you read I invite you to TASTE and SEE!
• Job 12:11 “Does the ear not put words to the test, just as the palate tastes its food [distinguishing between the desirable and the undesirable]?
• Psalm 119:103 How sweet are your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth!
A unfathomable delight occurs when we have been accustomed to interaction with God via the bible. Our interdependence/ trust in God’s purposes evoke deep heartfelt responsive prayers to Him.
• Matthew 5:13 [Disciples and the World] “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has lost its taste (purpose), how can it be made salty? It is no longer good for anything, but to be thrown out and walked on by people [when the walkways are wet and slippery].
• Nehemiah 1:11a Please, O Lord, let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant and the prayer of Your servants who delight to [reverently] fear Your Name [Your essence, Your nature, Your attributes, with awe];
Once regular daily reading of the bible has occurred; it takes only a brief period of time, before our experiences reveal our new ability to see God’s responsive provisions to our prayers. Then delightful praise results.
• Psalm 13:5 But I have trusted and relied on and been confident in your loving kindness and faithfulness; my heart shall rejoice and delight in your salvation.
• Psalm 37:28 For the Lord delights in justice and does not abandon His saints (faithful ones);
• Psalm 94:19 when my anxious thoughts multiply within me, your comforts delight me.
Our own delight, leads us to proclaim to others all the more!
O taste and see that the Lord [our God] is good; how blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God] is the man who takes refuge in Him. Psalm 34:8
God is DELICIOUS!
