“Deep down inside of every man is a spirit, and deep down inside every spirit there is a soul.”
I remembered the words of my dear friend, Mitaeoni. I had met him on a mission trip years ago. As soon as we arrived in his village, I noticed him. He was small, his skin was dark as midnight, and he had a big, bright smile you could not help but notice. Soon after we met, he told me about his family. They had been speared in a raid from a nearby village. His mother, sister and two brothers died in that raid. He had escaped and hid in the jungle for three days. His father had died when he was only a baby. As he finished telling me his story, tears began to well up in his eyes.
“Do you know why I smile?” he asked me.
“Why?” I responded.
“Because, every day, my God breaks open my spirit by reminding me of my family. And when my spirit is broken, he heals my soul.”
I smiled and acted like I understood, but I did not. He must have known that I would not understand because he proceeded to explain to me what he meant.
“You see, deep down inside of every man is a spirit, and deep down inside every spirit there is a soul. Every person comes to the earth with a spirit and a soul. When we are new, like babies, our soul is new. But we grow, we see things, do things, and think things that make our souls dirty. My God, who is perfect, cannot be at peace with our soul when it is dirty. If we continue as we are, our souls will become sick and diseased, and hard like this rock.” He picked up a rock and handed it to me.
“My God wants to bring healing to everyone’s soul. He wants to be at peace with every man. That is why Jesus came. My God broke Jesus’ spirit so that his clean, perfect soul could be shared with us. When anyone will accept Jesus, my God breaks their spirit through repentance and makes their soul clean like Jesus’ soul. After we accept Jesus, sometimes he will break our spirit to strengthen our soul. Every day when my spirit is broken for my family, my God reminds me that I must trust him. He shows me that I have a new family with all my brothers and sisters who also know Him. Every day he shows me this, and every day he brings strength to my soul.”
Mitaeoni held out his hand to take back the stone he had given me. I gave it to him. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a white piece of quartz. He looked deep into my eyes and said, “The teacher, who showed me these things, gave this white stone to me to symbolize my new soul. I now give it to you to remember, when my God breaks open your spirit, he only does this to heal, to bring strength, and to make peace with your soul.”
As I remembered Mitaeoni’s words, I began to feel the warmth of the fireplace on my arms. I lifted my head, got up, and walked into my bedroom. I opened the chest at the foot of my bed, took some things off the top, and set them aside. I pulled a small box from the bottom, opened it, and took out the white stone that my friend had given me so long ago. I clasped it with both hands and brought it to my chest. I wept again, but this time I could feel “My God” strengthening me, healing me, making peace with my soul, and asking me to trust him.
