Grandpa and Timmy were sitting around the kitchen table when Timmy’s older brother, Sam came laughing into the house with friends. Timmy asked, “What’s so funny?” Sam answered back that they just saw that fat girl again, before he saw his grandpa sitting there. “Whoa young man, grandpa sternly said.” “Uh sorry sir, Sam said.” Sam’s friends did not understand the respect Sam had for his grandfather and they continued to talk rudely and laugh. They were quickly asked to go home.

Sam was embarrassed and went to go upstairs, but grandpa said, “No, you need to come here a minute.” Sam came to the table, pulled out a chair and plopped into it. Grandpa made him sit up straight. Sam asked if Timmy could leave before he got a talking to. Grandpa said, “You both need to hear this.” Timmy stuck out his tongue at Sam and grandpa shot his disapproving look at Timmy. Now both grandchildren were sitting at the table flushed with embarrassment and sitting up straight.

Grandpa said, “Sam I am disappointed in what I heard come out of your mouth today.” “Why would you be mean to another person that way, by calling her names?” Sam said, “I’m afraid to say.” "Young man, I want the truth, obviously you have a reason and I want to hear it.” Sam told his grandpa that in Sunday School they were talking about gluttony and how gluttony is the overeating of food. “So when I saw that girl, we made fun of her for eating so much and being guilty of gluttony,” Sam said.

“Sam and Timmy, I want you both to listen carefully,” grandpa said. “Gluttony is not just overeating, it is the over doing of anything.” “Spending too much money is gluttonous spending.” “Putting yourself, before others all the time, is gluttonous behavior.” “Spending too much time on something, when you could be doing something productive for God, this too is gluttonous behavior.” Grandpa asked, “Are you getting the picture? Is there a word that you are hearing over and over, here?” Timmy raised his hand, “I know, I know, too much!” “Very good, you are right.”

“Can you think of something that you do that is gluttonous,” Grandpa asked? Timmy shot his hand up in a split second again, grandpa smiled and asked Sam to go first. “No, I don’t think I do anything like that,” Sam said. Grandpa asked, “what about your video games?” “I guess I play a little too much,” Sam said. “A little,” grandpa probed. “Ok, I play a lot of video games!” Grandpa thanked him for being honest. “Ok Timmy, your turn.” Timmy said, “I ask Mom for too much help, when a lot of things I could do myself, even when I know she’s really tired.” “Sounds like you can help Mom by starting to take care of things yourself,” grandpa said.

Grandpa said, “I want you both to remember that we are not perfect, no one is.” “We all have something that is hard for us to do without, that we struggle with.” Anything that is put above God, is wrong and you need to remember that.” “Ok, grandpa we will,” Sam and Timmy said. Grandpa allowed them to get up from the table and told them to push in their chairs and to go get busy on homework. They went running out of the room when Sam stopped and asked his grandpa if it was ok if he went and saw someone to apologize? Grandpa said with a big smile on his face, “You bet.” Grandpa looked up, closed his eyes, folded his hands and said, “thank you.”
