We boarded the plane on a cold, autumn afternoon. It had been raining the night before and the mood of the moment met the weather perfectly. Seating myself in the plane, I felt the anxieties of the past few days and past few hours especially, slowly part from us. Finally, we were away. Though, only just.

The morning had been spent racing between local post offices and on the phone to the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, chasing my two daughter’s passports. Though they were ordered 6 weeks earlier, they still hadn’t arrived and the tension was rising because of it.

We were eventually told that we’d have to take a detour to the actual office of Department of Foreign Affairs on the way to the airport, to pick up another copy of the passport- a journey we’d rather have avoided. However, after waiting in the office for about 30 minutes, my hand finally held the documentation allowing us to be on our way. I jumped in the car and tapped my foot anxiously, as my dad drove us onto the final destination before we were to leave Sydney.

Once there, we gathered what seemed to be a house full of items and had them cared for by airline staff. We were ushered onto the plane with about 10 minutes to spare. Breathing a sigh of relief, my daughters, fiancé and I, relaxed and waited for the flight to begin.

The flight itself was quite long- in minutes and in account of requiring our patience. My daughters were 2 & 4 and many prayers had been spoken for this moment. Our prayers paid off as finally, they drifted into a fair sleep and though the rest of the trip was spent finding new and exciting activities for the girls to enjoy, I can’t complain about the way they behaved. They were good girls, exhausted by the end, but regardless, good girls.

Almost 14 hours after the trip began, the plane finally landed in the country that prides itself on the liberty and justice for all. It was America- the home of my fiancé & the country where our life together in marriage was to begin.

We left the plane and found ourselves at the hotel that would ensure our re-cooperation from jetlag before heading further to the beautiful state of Kentucky. We knew once we arrived at Mike’s hometown, we could prepare ourselves fully for the wedding.

We’d be able to relax and continue building our relationship on the right foundation- by praying together, challenging each other spiritually and reading The Bible to discover God’s direction. This is what we both longed for more than anything.

After two days in LA we headed to our final destination. Both Mike and I were nervous going back to see his family and friends. I still don’t know the true reason- perhaps it was the mere fact that never again would we come to visit as a single person.

Still, we moved in the direction we believed God had called us and boarded the plane that would take us to the airport where his family would be waiting.

The next few weeks flew by as we settled in Williamsburg, Kentucky- the middle of nowhere. We prayed for perfect weather and for the safety of my family and friends flying from Sydney.

As I woke on the 16th of April, I smiled. Our prayers had been answered. My family and friends greeted me as I began the day of my wedding. The sun was beaming brightly and brilliantly. I knew God had everything in the palm of his hand and was watching over our every move.

As I smelt the freshness of my bouquet, I realised that at home, all the way back in Sydney, it was now Autumn and it would be getting colder by the day. But here, in the middle of nowhere, it was Spring and it was perfect. I knew that today, I would experience both new life in nature and new life for Mike and I.

Dressed in white to acknowledge the cleansing God had done in my life of recent times, the doors of the church opened wide and I saw my prince waiting. Fairy Lights and greenery lined both sides of the aisle and I walked towards him breathing in the air of Spring, the scent that will always remind me of the day I spoke the words of forever to another person- my soulmate and bestfriend.
