The road is long, narrow and as windy as a road can get, but there is something so simple about it that makes my heart swell with peace. We pass many quaint motels and my little sister squeals as she sees a puppy taking a running leap into a pool. Animals are welcome, after all we are in the middle of nowhere. But honestly, the tree’s could animate and start singing “choom by ya” and the locals would welcome them. The trees begin to thicken and I can tell we are ascending higher into the mountain. It won’t be long now.
I’m sure the campers are all set up in there cozy tents and RV’s. They are all back in the forest away from the road but I know they are there, they are always there. Roasting marshmallows, telling ghost stories, having family time. I’ve always wanted to go camping but my mother prefers hotel beds to dirt ones. I can see her point now. I enjoy the internet and food that is not charred over a fire. But camping is always an option.
The car bumps along which is not helping my situation with Samson any. The big goofball is determined to stuff his entire body out of the window. Every once and a while his nails dig into my legs. You don’t know pain until you’ve felt a dogs nail pierce your skin. My eyes are watering now but it’s almost here, I can’t miss it.
We pass a few rather large estates that are for rent this summer, boy would my mother love to stay in one of those. Large greens with rolling hills and a white picket fence surrounding the entrance. Off in the distance you can see the mini mansions glistening in all of their pure white glory. How amazing it would be to walk in the corridors of one of the houses and just belt out a tune? I can only imagine…
A glint shocks me out of my stupor. There it is. Samson see’s it too and whines. The lake rolls into view, it’s clear waves send sparkles of light to my eyes. I don’t know where to look first, I see large steam boats chugging along on their routine trips, small boats whipping kids around on tubes sending one poor soul flying into the water. Smiles are like clouds in the sky; too many to count. We pass families on the streets making jokes and eating ice cream. We made it to the town. An older couple walks past us and waves, they must be locals, locals are always very friendly here. I recognize some faces in the crowds. Aunts, uncles, and cousins. I wave at them which makes me laugh because they probably only see Samson’s head with my tiny hand peeking out.
The car rolls up the driveway and I’m finally free. My sister turns to me and asks “Whew awe we?” I smile at the toddler. “Lake George New York.” “Lake Geowge New Yowk” she repeats. “Yes.” I take a deep breath and step onto to solid ground.
I’m home.
