Becky trembled as she pulled open the door and walked into the Department of Public Transportation in a small Kansas town to get her driver’s license.
Becky’s mouth went dry as she collected the paper work from her handbag.
She felt the officer starring at her.
“May I help you?” he asked.
“I need a Kansas driver’s license; I just returned from Kenya,” she told the officer.
The officer smiled at her. “Oh, what were you doing there?”
Becky’s heart beat lowered and she began to relax as she spoke. “I’ m a missionary in Kenya. For the past ten years my husband and I have been working with Hindus and Muslims in the city of Nairobi.”
They walked out to the car and Becky got in the driver’s seat. As they rode along, they chatted. Becky was thrilled to discover that the examining officer was a Christian.
“Turn to your right at the next intersection.” He instructed.
Becky smiled. Even coming from Kenya with all the potholes, it didn’t look like much of an intersection.
Shocked, Becky found herself on the left side of the road. She flunked, and had to retake the test. Switching from right to left or from left to right does have its challenges. Just remember that God is on both sides of the road.
So, my British friends, if you come to America, know that everything will expand and seem larger. Maybe because they are! The roads are bigger, except for small country towns. Watch out, and remember to stay on the right hand side of the road. My American friends, when you visit England, expect everything to shrink, and be prepared to ‘think left’ on the road. Left can be right!
Sometimes we get stuck in a rut. We get so use to doing things in a certain way that we think it’s the only way to do it. God is bigger than our right and left. Many things are a matter of preference. It’s not right or wrong, only different.
I’m left handed. Unless you are a southpaw, you aren’t aware that this world is designed for right handed people. I’ve learned to use the opposite side of a spiral notebook so the binding doesn’t get in the way. There are other creative ways to overcome the challenges. Maybe that’s why left-handed people tend to be creative. It’s a matter of survival.
Living in different cultures has opened my eyes. People are different. I am learning to enjoy the variety. God created us individually. It would be a boring world if we were all alike. God wants us to celebrate our differences.
The only exception would be in relation to the Word of God. The problem comes when we confuse our cultural preferences with God’s truth. Sometimes we tend to think that our style of worship is the only right way to worship. Churches spit over music, dress code, pews or chairs, color of the walls, using power point or hymnals.
In our world today we need to rethink church. We need to be flexible. Are we putting a stumbling block in the way of the younger generation?
Strong on Biblical teaching, for we don’t want to budge there. Right in our walk with the Lord, for we don’t want to move away from Him. But adaptable and flexible in other areas.
Light and darkness doesn’t make any difference to the Lord, right and left don’t confuse Him either. Whether you’re on the right hand side of the road or the left; whether you are right handed or left handed, God remains the same.

God bless~
Right on topic.
You are so true in saying some trivial things have split churches apart.
How Sad!
Church is not a building, pews, curtains, or song style.
We are Church. We assemble together as a Church. To much is focused on appearance, not the spirit.
Good message.
I have to laugh about the driving. You put a good twist on it.
I dare say if I went to England and drove, I would end up in a dungeon for killing someone. Ha!
God bless.
The driving story was an awesome analogy and drew me in. Great truths regarding our God.
