Winter’s Warm Fuzzies

The day I was born was a raging blizzard, so the doctor and nurse decided they could make the trip out to the farmhouse better than my Mother. The kitchen was the warmest place in the house, so guess that tells my age.

Winter can bring on many memories, like wiener roosts in the fireplace. My Grandmother thought that was a great way to entertain my brother and I. I loved it! She spread a cloth in front of the fireplace and put everything we would need and then the fun begin. Oh yes, you have to turn out all lights. Neat!! Later in my life when I had a daughter we would go to a small park near us and have a winter picnic. You have to go on a sunny day and find a sheltered spot. Great fun and you still have picnic pests, only they’re bigger. Squirrels and birds stopped by to see what we had to offer. That was great fun too.

I also remember making snow ice cream with my cousins, but couldn’t find enough clean snow when my daughter was growing up. Which is too bad because that too was a great experience that children miss now.

My daughter and I moved to Florida one year and spent Christmas there. It was sunny and eighty degrees on Christmas day. We moved back that next year, because to me it wasn’t Christmas without snow and cold. Snowball fights, making snowmen and sledding those are winter activities that make winter fun. Even as an adult I still enjoy those things. Oh yes, sleigh rides with bells jingling and hot chocolate and roasting marshmallows over an open fire. Ahhh, winter who doesn’t enjoy it, at least in your mind if not physically. It’s a fun time with more activities than I have mentioned here. I’m sure others would come up with their own memories of winter and what they did, but that’s what makes it a great time of year.

Very nostalgic piece. A few problems with snetence structure; if edited, this would be a lovely meeting opener for a womens' group.

This is a charming piece. One lesson that I think could be learned here is that:

I would take the time to review the beginning. This is the part that will catch your readers first. To say that its the day you were born and the doctors felt they could journey better through the blizzard than your mother leaves me thinking, of course they could, she's in labor.

Of course after continuing I understand that you meant they felt it easier to journey to her than to them. But, be careful of sentences that cause your reader to pause.

This is the same area that I'm working in my writing too, clarity!

Paragraph 2 was a beautiful paragraph with lots of good memories. I wouldn't mind having a fireplace in front of me and having a winter picnic there. Sounds delightful! The opening paragraph, like Andria said, maybe needs to have a couple of sentences reworded. One rewording comes to mind: "A blizzard raged the day I was born. The doctor and nurse determined that they could make the trip out to the farmhouse easier than my mother, already in labor, could come to them." This is an excellent piece to cherish and pass on to family members when they are old enough to appreciate the value of Mother's, Grandmother's, or Great-Grandmother's memories. My husband's stepmother, who came to the family after his biological mom died, did this for us. Now we have photocopied pages of his maternal grandmother's and biological mother's journals and memories.
