I had the opportunity, though at times I thought it was a curse, to grow up on a turkey farm. We raised 35,000 turkeys every year. Every day we provided them with food, water, shelter and protection. Yet not a single turkey thanked us nor indicated by some gesture they appreciated our devotion to them. We did not expect it from them because we recognized God never gave them that attribute.

However, God made us different when He gave us life. He wants us to know, love and obey Him. Satan, on the other hand, does not want us to acknowledge God. The devil has discriminately encouraged man to question our very origin, sustainability and future. Satan knows if he can eliminate the truth of creation, create doubts regarding God’s daily provisions, protection and our purpose in life we will be less likely to give our full devotion to God and His will for our lives. This devilish tactic began in the Garden of Eden when Satan asked Eve, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” (Genesis 3:1 NKJV) After this Adam and Eve sinned by partaking of the forbidden fruit. This action resulted in their fear to have fellowship with God.

Our merciful and gracious Father initiated a continual dialogue with mankind. There are numerous narratives between God and man recorded in the Old Testament writings. God the Father and on some occasions God the Son spoke directly to these men because they did not have the written Scriptures. For example, God spoke directly to Moses and gave him the Ten Commandments and what became known as the Mosaic Law for the children of Israel.

Four books in the New Testament chronicle the life of God the Son, Jesus Christ, during His earthly ministry. Today we can witness His conversations, teachings and miracles with His disciples and other followers. We can read of Jesus’ response and rebuke to those who challenged his Deity, His interpretations of the Law and performing miracles. After His death and resurrection and just before His ascension back to Heaven, Jesus told His disciples God the Father would send them a Comforter, His Holy Spirit.

Apostle Peter solidifies this truth when he wrote in II Peter 1:20,21: “knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” (NKJV) This same person, His Holy Spirit, dwells within each believer performing His work as that believer allows. God uses these channels of communication to undeniably tell us who He is, what He can do, who we are and what we can be if we place our trust in His Son, Jesus Christ.

God has provided us with His written word. God has also given us an avenue whereby we can speak to Him. Prayer allows us to communicate with God. James adequately states this in his letter to the early Christians in James 5:15-17 (NKJV):

“And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months.”

Prayer is our means of praising, glorifying, worshipping, and honoring our Father. Through prayer we can directly give thanks, ask forgiveness of our sins, present requests for ourselves and others, ask for healing, seek His interceding on behalf of ourselves and others, seek His will for our lives, the list is endless. God wants to be the center of our lives.
The animal kingdom does not have the written Word of God to read and meditate upon nor do they have the capability of prayer to their Creator. Man was created in the image of God. He wants to speak to us and He wants us to speak with Him. There is a direct relationship between God and man.
