It would not be an easy task for Mark had made a name for himself in this town, Pastor Mark Henning.
How dare he accuse her? He would regret the day he told the town council that they had the wrong woman as Mayor. That Kim had no real training to do this job. Just who did he think he was messing with?
Mark simply had not forgiven her for braking their engagement years ago, and leaving town. He’s the one that thought going into the ministry was more important than their relationship. When he gave his heart over to the Lord he felt the calling.
She had given her heart too but was not ready to make this kind of commitment. She tried to tell him this. He beg her to follow him and they could begin their life together.
Her answer was no. She left Clayton a few months later. She had heard he moved too to start his Bible studies.
It was hard at first, Kim really loved Mark but it was so evident that he did not have deep feelings for her. So being hurt and humiliated she left town.
Mark came back here three years ago to take over the pastor position at the Calvary church in town.
Kim came back to Clayton just recently on hearing that the Mayor’s position was available. She applied and took over the position for the next two years. Her family was elated that she was back.
Kim ran into Mark last week. He was polite but distant. He welcomed her back and asked her to come to church but she declined his offer.
“No thanks, Mark. I am doing quite well, how about you? Are you married?” Goodness, Seeing Mark brought her old feelings to the surface.
“No, I mean I was, but Janet died a year ago, in a car accident, both Janet and our son died that day.” His face still held the pain of this as he talked. “How about you engaged, married?”
“No to both questions.” She attempted a smile.
Kim knew that she would not attempt to get back at Mark. He had been through enough and she would not rock his world again.
Why he said what he did about her, she didn’t know, Evelyn told her this was what she had overheard.
Stepping out from the bank entrance now, she almost ran into him. “Hello, Mark, we meet again.”
“Hello, Kim.” It was all he said.
“Mark, could you answer a question for me? Why did you tell the city council that I was the wrong person for the Mayor’s Job?” Kim watched his face for any signs.
“I didn’t say that, I think you’d do great in the position, why?”
“Someone told me you said this, and it shocked me a little bit.” She replied.
“Who told you, Kim?” He looked intently at her.
“It was Evelyn; she said she had heard what you told them.”
“I might have known. Kim, Evelyn has a thing for me, and she has and will eliminate any competition that might get in her way. That would be you. She knew that I was pleased when I heard you were back.” She also knew we were once engaged.”
“Kim I never stopped loving you, but I had to go on with my life and I was really happy in my marriage I had everything I could want, but you know the rest.
“Mark, I thought you didn’t love me enough, and I felt so hurt and alone is why I left.
How could I have been so wrong?” What have I done to us?” I didn’t want any more to do with you or your God. Mark, I am so sorry.”
“Kim, forgive me, maybe we can start getting to know each other again, and see what happens. With both our feelings out in front of us we have exposed our innermost thoughts to each other, maybe we have a chance. Janet would want this for us, she knew about you. She helped me with my hurt and helped me be a better person because of her.
“Let’s pray and give it to the Lord, for greater is He.” Mark smiled at Kim as he took her hand.
“I would love that.” Kim smiled back. Maybe this time we can both include God.”

Nice wrap up with this. Forgiveness and a united front in faith will sooth a person'soul harvesting ripe fruit.
Nicely done!
God bless~
I was torn from your beautiful story a few times because of punctuation, quotation marks in wrong places, and additional capitalizations. However, I would love to know more about Kim and Mark. I love that Kim was able to come right out and ask Mark and see the truth. The other portion that caught my attention was the underlying, when people are at least momentarily unequally yoked what happens relationally. Very nice twist.
You handled the conversations well but watch the punctuation in each line.
If you like this kind of story but want to make it longer, add some descriptive scenes and also other contemplative self-talk by the main characters.
