Adam smiled. “The skins your mom and I first wore were from a lamb. We had sewn together fig leaves, but God clothed us in lamb skins instead.”
Abel threw a fig at Cain. “Did you hear, there is a second lamb – there’s one for each of us.”
“I already have an offering.”
“Why don’t we all go look at the lambs.” Eve opened the door and gestured them onward.
“I’ve got some work to do, I’ll look at them later.” Cain headed toward the field. There were rows of lush green bushes and plants. A sweet fragrance from them filled the air. He had worked hours in the garden. As he proudly looked at the fruit of his labor, he noticed a serpent slithering by. Mom and dad warned him about serpents. He grabbed a stick to smash it, but it was gone.
Surely this offering will be better than Abel’s lamb. That kid is lazy. Mom and dad always did coddle him too much. I wonder if God likes him better. He walks around with the animals all day, talking to God. Some of us have work to do. If I were in charge of things, it would be a lot different.
When it got dark, Cain headed home and crawled into bed. As he began to drift off, he could hear Abel talking to God.
“Thank you for the lamb God, it is perfect. I knew you would provide me with an offering. I love you God.”
Sickening; God even provided Abel with his offering. I will show the stupid kid how it’s done. God just wait till you see my offering Cain boasted. I did everything by myself. It took hours of work and a lot of sweat. I know you’ll be pleased because I am a great farmer.
In the Morning Adam roused both of his sons. “It’s time to give our offerings to God.”
Cain brought all kinds of fruit in different colors and sizes. He proudly laid them out on the altar.
Abel followed with the little lamb. He shed tears when he slayed it on the altar next to Cain’s fruit. As Abel stepped back, and the lamb burst into flames.
They all fell down and worshiped except Cain. Anger flooded his heart and his face contorted. After all that work, You’re just going to leave my fruit to rot?
The Lord spoke to Cain. “Why are you upset? If you do well will you not be accepted? If you fail, sin lies at the door. It shall be eager for you, and you will be mastered by it."
Cain begrudgingly got down with the others. After the worshiping was finished, Cain went to his field and began pacing, thinking of ways to get back at Abel. He jumped sideways as he almost stepped on a serpent. It stayed still like it was staring at him then slithered away.
He felt his brother’s hand on his shoulder. “Mom wants you to bring some fruit home.”
Spinning around, Cain pushed him. “You think you are so great don’t you? You are nothing!”
Abel stumbled back, but kept his footing. “You know what brother, I am great. God told me so. He was very pleased with my offering.”
Enraged, Cain ran toward his brother knocking him to the ground. Climbing on top of him, he began pummeling him. Abel managed to swing back a couple times but Cain grabbed a rock and brought it down on Abel’s head ending the fight. Blood spilled into the soil.
Panicking, Cain buried Abel, and then sat under a tree to rest.
The Lord asked him, “Cain, where is your brother?”
Cain drew a serpent in the dust. “I don’t know, am I my brother’s keeper?”
“What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. When you till the ground it will not yield for you. A fugitive you shall be.”
