Growing up with a mother that was born and raised in Germany was interesting. We washed vindows on Saturdays; cleaning day, and on Sunday mornings we all put our veils or as my mom called them, whales on our heads for Church.
I really didn’t know any different at that age. It wasn’t until I got into school that I started to see the differences.
The next difference that I noticed was the cooking. I was invited for dinner at my best friend, Carol’s house and I was happy to hear that we were having burritos. But when we were all served and everyone dug in, I was a bit surprised. You see, I was used to a flour tortilla, so they looked the same but when I bit in, the taste was not bad, just different. My mom filled our burritos with pork and beans and velveta cheese, quite a different flavor.
My mother got used to living in the United States and over the years her speech and her cooking improved. One day recently, my mother and I were walking in the park and she started a conversation with another lady. This lady asked if my mom was from Germany. My mom said yes, with a puzzled look on her face. After the woman left, my mom looked wide eyed at me and asked, “How did she know I was from Germany?”
“Your accent,” I said.
“I still have an accent?”
“yes Mom, you do, it’s only been about 60 years since you have been in the United States!”
