“Mel, I am so tired of working forty plus hours a week and still being flat broke. Money disappears as fast as I can make it.” Donald picked up his sandwich and took a big bite, followed by a bite of his favorite dill pickles.
“Donald, I know that money does not go as far as it did. Things keep getting higher, and of course food is among them. But if you’d just come to church and start giving of your money, your money would go further. God promises us this, He’ll meet our needs.”
“Come on Sis, I really don’t need to hear this, I grew up in the same church as you, remember?” Donald spoke as he reached for his ice tea. “I have no desire to go back to church. It’s just not for me.”
“Donald, listen I have much of the same bills as you and even though I do not make as much as you, I still manage to set aside money each week. It’s because I do what God asked us to do. Give a portion back to Him. I’ve done it for over five years and He has blessed me many times. “I have a nice nest egg, and I praise Him for I have never been flat broke as you say.”
Donald stared at his sister, she was so calm and assured of what she was telling him. Maybe there was something to what she said. He knew his mom and dad had done just that. They always had what they needed plus more.
He knew that he disappointed his parents when he decided not to continue coming
because of his ex-girlfriend. She continued to go there after they broke up. It was such a bad experience when she told him she no longer wanted this relationship to go on. He was shocked and disillusioned over the matter, which was about a year ago.
Donald put himself into his work and decided he did not need God or the church. Looking back now, that’s when things started to go downhill. He thought that Dee loved him and wanted the same things and eventually marriage too. How wrong could a guy get? Where was God in this equation?
Left with no girl in his life he just seemed to coast along. He started going out with his buddies at work, hanging around in the bars, drinking a beer or two. That, besides work was what he lived for. He had no desire to return to God and the church.
Donald, amazed with what he just thought made him realize what he was doing. He was blaming God, Dee and the church as the problem, for causing this dilemma of being flat broke!
He almost shouted with relief. “Sis, you are right.” He watched his sister’s surprised face as she smiled. “I need to stop blaming everyone except me. I’ll be in church next week, with my tithes and offerings. I have some explaining to do, especially to God.” He smiled with relief on his handsome face. “Oh, and Sis, could you spot me a twenty till Friday so I won’t be flat broke.”
Their laughter filled the room, finishing their lunch they both cleaned the table and did the dishes.
Donald couldn’t help but think, how much better he felt over a lot of things, and just maybe he could get on with his life, even in the love department. He would love to ask Janice out. Maybe his sister and Max could double with them. He would ask her this week and then touch base with Mel; maybe things would start looking up for him. He veered off the track a little but was back on track now.
Donald knew that he needed to do his part about trusting and obeying the Lord, being a good steward of his time and money. Sometimes you make choices on your own, leaving God totally out of the picture. Donald knew that this was not the best idea because it leads to self-destruction in your life. The good thing about God is that He is always there to welcome you back.
