Joseph had the steward of his house bring the men in and give them water to wash their feet. After this long journey, you can almost feel the refreshment of the water as they washed before having lunch (Genesis 43:24, 25).
This comes from one of my favourite stories of the Old Testament. Joseph---sold into slavery by his brothers---receives a huge promotion. He becomes next in command over the most powerful country in the world. The bible tells us in Genesis 41:40, “You [Joseph] shall be over my [the pharaoh’s] house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you" (NKJV). Notice the verse says, “Only in regard to the throne”. Joseph was a picture of Jesus, the Son of God.
In the New Testament, Jesus gathers the disciples together for another prominent meal. They came together for what we know as, “the last supper”. This time the disciples also had their feet washed but this time, they did not do it themselves. Jesus did it for them (John 13:12).
In the Old Testament, we had to do the work ourselves. We had to make ourselves righteous by obeying the commandments of God. In the New Testament, Jesus cleanses us of all unrighteousness (1 John 1:7).
So how do we activate this cleaning process? The Bible says in Ephesians 5:26, “that He [Jesus] might sanctify and cleanse her [the church] with the washing of water by the word” (NKJV). Activate Jesus by spending time in His Word. The Bible also says in John 6:29, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent" (NKJV).
I spend time with Jesus. As I spend time reading the Bible, talking to Him, and learning about Him in church, He has become real to me. I talk to Him the same way I talk to a good friend. In this way, He keeps my mind on good things while He takes care of bad things.
I have seen bad habits fade away and not even noticed them disappearing. He even helped me give up smoking this way after trying it on my own for over thirty years.
Working to be in righteous will make you weary. Let Him do the work, this is the easy way.
