Yet perhaps one of the most conspicuous of these simple joys I find is moonlight. Especially when away from the bright artificially lighted streets present in most of our world. It is then that you can truly appreciate the softness, and the power, of moonlight. So much is written about moonlight. Poetic verse and musical lyrics abound, all paying tribute to the unique qualities of moonlight.
In rural areas, when the sun goes down, life slows down. Most of the day’s activity is scheduled for daylight. At the time of moonlight, we retire. We settle down. In many areas, the only outdoor light that can be seen for great distances is moonlight. And when a full moon is present, the glow that covers the world is awe inspiring and soothing. To simply stand in an open field that is saturated by moonlight can bring a calm to even the most chaotic of days.
But why is moonlight so special? What makes it stand out? Perhaps there is something special about the moon. Nope, that can’t be it. The moon is just a lifeless rock hanging in space. In and of itself it possesses little value. Yet, its glow can bring not only life to an otherwise lifeless evening but also life to those who behold it. So if the moon is not special, why is moonlight special?
Because of what moonlight is … a reflection. Moonlight is so invigorating because light is so. And when we behold moonlight, we are perhaps observing the greatest quality the moon possesses – its ability to reflect the sun it faces. As long as it can face the sun, the reflection of moonlight exists to bless and inspire those of us it covers.
We are not so different. We can often feel lifeless and possessing of little indigenes value. And we all exist in a world that seems to grow darker each day. What different can we make? What impact can we have? How can we stand out?
Well … it starts with deciding the direction our lives face. You and I will reflect whatever we are facing. We too can be vessels of life and inspiration by facing the Light of the world. In Him, we not only find joy and peace but can also allow the glow of His fellowship to radiate to the dark world through which we travel. Of ourselves, we are nothing. But when we reflect His light, we become sources of power that can quiet the most turbulent of hearts. And of course, this starts with the calming of our own.
Moonlight! It has inspired love songs and romance poetry for centuries. Why, because the moon is special? Not really. It’s because the moon faces the sun. And the greater blessing we are given, that the moon was not, is that we face the Son … by choice. We can choose to face, and walk in, His marvelous light and reflect it to a dark and depressed world.
But this starts with the question of what direction is your life is facing. That is what determines the light you will reflect to others … and what you’ll be blessed by yourself.
