Mr. Outstanding just recently amazed his family by retrieving an Easter basket for his great grand mother, who resides in the nursing home. We were in the dining room and she decided she wanted Easter chocolate. Of course Mr. Outstanding was eager to help, and although we wondered if he could find the room, he was successful at finding it just by the room number we gave him. In only a few minutes he returned with the basket.
“Did someone help you find the room?” We asked.
“Nope did it all by myself,” was his reply, not even phased by our surprise.
His grandparents cannot take a trip to the beach without him, for he loves it so much. There he walks up and down the sandy miles, making friends as he goes. Some friends he has made there are on his cell phone and some he looks forward to seeing on each trip and, they also look anxiously toward seeing Mr. Outstanding at the beach.
His hair is longer than most and he wears all black, sporting his Gothic style, with beads and pendants which have a specific meaning to only him.
He fills his days at home with walking the neighborhood stores, or watching movies. His favorite movies are “Alice in Wonderland” and “Nightmare Before Christmas.”
When it first became evident that Mr. Outstanding was different than other kids, no one imagined his difference would be such a blessing.
Mr. Outstanding is 20 years old. Those who don’t know him may think he is quite strange. Doctors may even diagnose him as mentally challenged. But those of us who have the privilege to know him, think him to be a loving, kind, compassionate, sweet, outstanding human being.
