Not only do I enjoy eating sweets, but I also enjoy baking them and handing them out to friends and family. Recently I decided to make some lovely cupcakes to share with the next-door neighbours. What nicer way to show a little of God’s love, than to share some yummy chocolate cupcakes. That’s right, the cupcakes were chocolate with sprinkles on top. I have to admit as I walked along the porch to their front door I felt rather proud of my treats. I had nine cupcakes on the platter. I reached out to knock on their door when suddenly my foot hit a patch of ice. I did what I call the ‘grannie annie dance’. My platter of cupcakes slid this way and that way and by the time the ‘grannie annie dance’ was over, there was one cupcake left on the platter and it was upside down. One of the cupcakes had the misfortune of flying through the air and hitting the window on the door and so there was a chocolate blob on the window. Another one hit the siding of their white house and so there was a chocolate blob on the house. The rest of the cupcakes were scattered all around in front of the door. The next problem was that the door was actually a glass door, so I could see in and unfortunately they could see out. As I was slithering around on the porch on my hands and knees trying to be invisible and retrieve the cupcakes, one of the children looked out the window and to my horror we made eye contact for a brief moment. I held my breath hoping he would not call mommy to come and see the funny old lady on her hands and knees eating chocolate cupcakes. Quickly I jumped up and hid from view for a few moments. I felt like a criminal hiding in the shadows, which kind of made things even more exciting. ‘Mommy’ peeked out the window and seeing no one, she went back to whatever she was doing and although the little guy peeked out one more time, he finally moved away from the window. I quickly grabbed the remaining cupcakes and tried to wipe the chocolate blobs off the window and the house to no avail. The chocolate icing smeared around like finger paint. Finally, I went home carrying my platter with one upside down cupcake.
Maybe my handing out treats to the neighbours has a few glitches. But, chocolate chip cookies or cupcakes can encourage a broken heart. Reaching out to someone who is hurting can be difficult. But, if we just show up with cupcakes or cookies in hand, and begin a conversation, God will do the rest through His spirit. I am not sure it is necessary to do the ‘grannie annie dance’ and throw cupcakes all around. But, I will tell you, the cupcake fiasco did open up opportunities for us to laugh together and eventually I was able to share Jesus with them.
Every once in a while, I think of starting up my singing for cookies business again. I would sing and the neighbors could hand out cookies to me. However, I am not sure what my momma would think!
