On his 35th birthday he awoke from a strange dream, one he just couldn’t shake. He had a dream he was seeking pearls, and when he found the finest one, he sold all that he had to purchase it. Strange, very strange. Why in the world would he do such a thing for one pearl? The dream made no sense to him.
It was very early but he wanted to clear his head, so he went for a drive. He drove far out of the city. He thought over all he had made for himself. He smiled just thinking about it. He could have anything he wanted. He didn’t need anything. So what did he want?
It was just then that his car broke down. Fixing cars was not his thing. He paid people for that. He pulled out his cell phone and discovered he had no bars. Some birthday this was turning out to be.
It was then that he noticed the beautiful field of wild flowers he was now stuck beside. The sun was still rising. It was amazingly beautiful. There was a soft breeze rustling the leaves of the trees not far off. In the distance he thought he even heard the sound of a stream. He felt like he’d stumbled on a bit of paradise. It had been a long time since he had enjoyed nature.
He peeked at his phone again. Still no bars. He thought for a moment and then locked his car. He decided a walk would be good for thinking. The smells of this place were fresh and pure. He made his way to the middle of the field where a circle of trees stood tall. There he found a rock and sat down.
Taking a deep breath, he looked up towards the sky. Simply gorgeous he thought to himself. The rock beneath him then rolled and he found himself on the ground. That’s when he saw the shoe box. It was beat up and tied shut with a string. The man couldn’t resist, he pulled the string and opened the box.
Inside he found a black leather book. He pulled it out and opened it. It was a Bible. He flipped through the pages, a first for him. Before he knew it, he was drawn into the book. He sat there for the next two hours soaking in the account of a man he had only passed by all his life.
He was in disbelief at what he read. Quiet tears ran down his face. He placed the Bible back into the box and hid it away back under the rock. Then he prayed and gave his life to Jesus, his new friend.
“Dear Lord, I sit here amazed at your feet. I’ve never prayed before, so forgive me if I’m not doing it right. I know I have wasted my life on me. My time has been consumed with building up a kingdom for myself. I need a new architect for my life. I’m going to follow you. Please forgive me for all I’ve done and not done and be my Lord and Savior.”
When he opened his eyes the sun shined brighter, the flowers around him smelled sweeter. He felt the breeze on his face and smiled. Thinking of the treasure he’d found, he left it in its place for someone else to find.
He returned to his car and not to his surprise it started. His phone had its bars also. He smiled remembering he’d once heard that God works in mysterious ways.
As he made his way back home, he thought about the verse he’d read which talked about, what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, if he forfeits his soul. How true had that been of him just hours ago.
He made a few calls on his way home. The first to his boss. He quit. One to his real estate agent, he was selling the penthouse. And the last one was to his sister.
