I wanted more proof so I happily altered my day. By that night I had a new bounce in my step, as I made Michael’s favorite meal, Chicken Parmesan. I set the table and placed the small box at the center of the table.
“Honey, I’m home.” He came in and put down his brief case and wrapped me in a warm hug as he did every night.
“Hi, how was your day?” I asked. Usually I always listened attentively, but tonight all I could think about was what I had found. I thought I would surely burst if I didn’t tell him.
We sat down to dinner. He was so busy telling me about a meeting at the office, that he didn’t even notice the box. I let him finish his story and then I just couldn’t wait any longer. I reached for the box and slid it over to him.
“What’s this? My birthday was last week.”
“I’m sorry it came a little late.” I smiled as he took the lid off the ordinary blue box. He just stared at the black and white picture. Slowly a smile stretched across his face. Then he reached over to me and pulled me into his arms.
“This is for real! Can you believe it?” I said to him, sitting on his lap.
He immediately bowed his head, I did too and he prayed, holding me right there at our kitchen table.
“Dear Father God, You are amazing. You hear and answer our prayers. Thank you for your blessings, each and every one. Thank you for being a sovereign God. We may not know why things happen the way they do, but we know you are always working things out for our good. Please be with us and keep us in your care. Thank you for the treasure you have given to us. In Your Son’s precious name we pray, Amen.”
Michael reached back into the box and pulled out the slip of paper. He studied it and then turned his face back up to me.
“So it says here February, a little Valentine maybe? “
“Only God knows,” I said as he put his hand on my stomach.
“So what are we going to name this treasured little miracle?” he asked as I got up and brought him the picture of him with his older brother Aaron. He’d been gone almost ten years.
“I was thinking Aaron Jordan McNeal after your brother. If it’s a girl we can just change the spelling to E-R-I-N,” I told him handing him the picture of him with Aaron at our wedding.
Michael stared at the picture and at the ultrasound.
“That is a wonderful idea. Have I told you lately how much I love you? You are the sweetest, kindest woman I know.”
“Yes but I don’t mind you repeating yourself. And you forgot beautiful.” I smiled just before he kissed me.
“Beautiful? There aren’t the words to describe you. But know that you and this baby are my greatest treasures here on this earth. God has been so good to me.”
I kissed him again, putting my hands on either side of his face telling him, “To us, He’s been so good to us.”
