When she went inside there was another woman waiting for the elevator. “Good evening,” Melanie said as she walked over to where she stood. The woman looked at her and smiled. “Good evening.”
“Have you been waiting long for the elevator?”
“No.” Just then the doors opened and the woman stepped in. She pressed the number ten. Turning to Melanie, she asked, “Which floor?”
“Eight. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
There was silence. Both stared at the display as the numbers increased. Good, Melanie, thought as she saw the number five. Soon, I will be getting off. I will have a nice hot shower first before I settle down in front of the TV and have my wings and…Her thoughts were interrupted by what sounded like an explosion, shaking the building. The lights flickered and then the elevator stopped. Then everything went dark then moments later a dim light came on.
“What was that?” The woman exclaimed, sounding scared. “It sounded like a bomb. Do you think it’s a terrorist attack?”
Melanie didn’t know what to think. She fumbled in her handbag for her cell. She punched in 911. She heard a beep and looked at the display. There was no reception. “My phone isn’t working.” She went to the elevator panel and removed the phone receiver but it wasn’t working. She pushed the alarm button. No luck. She tried her cell again but had the same result.
The woman went to the elevator doors and pounded on them as hard as she could, yelling, “Help! We’re stuck in here!”
Melanie said to her, “As as Christian I learned from my mother that the best thing to do whenever I find myself in a tight situation is to pray.” She reached out and took the woman’s hand. “Dear Lord, I know that You can hear me and that You can see what is happening. We are trapped in this elevator and we are scared. Please help us to get out of here safely. I know that nothing is impossible for You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”
The woman continued to bang on the door and cry for help. After a while she stopped and turned to Melanie. “How can you be so calm?” She wondered. “A moment ago you were panicking like me.”
“I’m calm now because I know that God is in control of this situation. He has gotten me out of tougher ones before and I know that He will get me out of this one.”
“Why would He put you in this situation?”
“I don’t know. Maybe He wanted us to meet.”
“Like this? Stuck in an elevator for who knows how long? Your God has a strange sense of humour.”
Melanie sensed that God was impressing her to witness to this woman. “What’s your name?” she asked.
“Nancy.”
“I’m Melanie. You said that you were hungry. I have some wings and fries. We can share. Let’s sit down and eat.”
Nancy hesitated for a moment and then she sat down. She took the napkin Melanie offered her and helped herself to some wings and fries. “So, tell me more about this God of yours and why you think He would go to all this trouble just for us to meet.” She said.
Melanie took a deep breath. “I will begin with what He did for the world through His Son, Jesus Christ...”
Help came at eight in the morning. It turned out that one of there was an electrical outage which caused the explosion. The entire block had been plunged into darkness. Before they parted, Nancy said, “Thank you for helping me to get through the night and for sharing your faith. Now that I have a better idea of who God is I want to have a personal relationship with Him. I am glad we got stuck.”
Melanie smiled. “If you are interested in studying the Bible or need a prayer partner, stop by apartment 802.” The elevator doors opened and she stepped out.
