Having been raised in the Midwest, we take the changing of the seasons for granted. We never give much thought to the other things around us that parallel this miraculous phenomenon. Spring, summer, autumn and winter not only help us mark the passage of time, but our own lives are also reflected in these seasons. Perhaps God created the four seasons so He would not lose His place in the creation. Likewise, we were given the four seasons to mark the stages of our own lives to keep track of our journey through life.
As I think about spring, it is the awakening of nature and our own birth. There is newness and excitement as the buds burst forth on the trees and the earth warms to push forth new life from within. There is a certain rush, an urgency during this season both in nature and in our lives. It is our youth when all things seem possible. We are anxious to see the challenges the future has in store for us.
The warmth of the sunshine - the blue of the skies - summer has arrived and so our middle age. Nature shows off its magnificent beauty and abundant bounty. The earth brings forth its best in the lush foliage, brilliant blossoms and waves of grains to feed creation. The splendor of summer is unmatched. Yet summer brings with it turbulent, powerful weather that can nourish or destroy. Summer is the culmination of what we have become. Our own lives can be plunged into the dark valleys by disappointment, or lifted to the mountain tops by our accomplishments. There we experience the glory and the wonder of nature. There both are fulfilled.
As autumn moves in and nature slows from the exhaustion of summer, we are prompted to pause and ponder the enjoyment of the blessings which have been showered upon us. Nature begins to prepare itself for the approaching winter as we begin to prepare ourselves for the winter of our own lives. There is relaxation in the air and anticipation for what lies ahead. We find ourselves looking both ways, pondering accomplishments and looking to the future for our destiny.
Winter brings life to a halt. Nature packs away a dormant life under a blanket of snow to rest and recuperate in the confidence that spring will come again. As our own lives end we also enter a dormant life with the anticipation of the promise that we too shall live again as spring returns and summer follows.
