“Oh, Jamie, let’s take a last walk in the woods before it’s winter, and we can’t go there anymore,” Polly said, as she grabbed her little light jacket.
The two girls rushed off to make the most of their 2 hours, with Cuddly and Sammy, Polly's calico kitten, trailing playfully behind them.
The trees had dropped most of their leaves, and they crunched with each step the girls took. The path was covered so deep that it was hard to be sure if they were on the path. The birds were singing at the top of their voices as they flew here and there. It seemed that they realized it would not be long before the weather would change.
As the girls skipped along, suddenly, they realized they were not on the usual path. Cuddly and Sammy were totally unaware of the situation, as they romped and played, and chased the blowing leaves..
“Polly, we aren’t on the path, and we are supposed to be home in 15 minutes, and it’s starting to get cold out here. Do you know which way we should go:”
Polly felt a chill, as a cool breeze struck her, and the leaves began to blow into piles. She looked carefully around her, and realized they had aimlessly wandered deep into the woods, where they had never been before.
Polly's voice shook as she said,
No, I don’t, and mommy is going to be very angry if we’re not home on time. What are we going to do””
Jamie stood thoughtfully for a moment. “Let’s pray and ask Jesus to help us find our way.” The girls hugged one another, and poured out their hearts in prayer.
Well,” said Polly, “which way do you think we should go?”
“It seems like we came from that way.”
Polly pointed the direction she thought was home. The girls began to walk as straight as they could. They called Sammy and Cuddly. Of course, Sammy and Cuddly were having so much fun, but they changed their course, and came running.
Suddenly, Jamie emitted a piercing scream as she suddenly disappeared from sight. “Jamie, “ Polly screamed as she looked down a large hole which had been hidden under the pile of leaves. Jamie sobbed uncontrollably.
Polly got down on her knees beside the big hole, and tried to reach Jamie’s hand, to no avail. Polly also began to cry.
“What are we going to do, Jamie? Did you get hurt bad?” “I think I’m okay. Please don’t leave me it’s so cold down here, and I’m scared.”
Again, Polly bowed her head and began to pray. “Please Jesus, help us, we don’t know what to do, and we are in trouble, and it is getting so cold!” “Meow,” said Sammy. Polly picked up her kitty, and held her close. The warmth of her body was comforting. As she looked around, she thought, “Where is Cuddly?” He was nowhere to be seen. Polly didn’t want to tell Jamie that Cuddly was missing; but his absence troubled her.
Jamie and Polly both began to heave huge sobs, and Polly felt so helpless. Wait! She heard a crackling noise. “Shhh” she said to Jamie, “I think I hear someone walking in the leaves.” The girls controlled themselves, and listened. At last, emerging from the trees, Polly saw Cuddly, followed by her mom and dad, and Jamie’s mom and dad. “Mommy, “ she screamed, “we got off the path, and we got lost, and Jamie fell in a hole, and I’m so sorry we were lost and went the wrong way, and , and, “ Sally sobbed, as Mom held her close ,while Daddy and Mr. Smith got Jamie out of the hole.
The woods seemed eerie as the dusk settled down over the 2 little families, trudging their way back home. Jamie said, “Polly, Jesus did hear our prayers and sent help to us.
Mom said, “We all need to thank Him, God must have sent Cuddly to get us” There in the woods, the best friends praised Jesus for answering everyone’s prayers, and keeping the little girls safe.
