There was a little caterpillar,
so timid and afraid.
He never crawled on other plants,
but on his leaf he stayed.
He had a curious inch in him
to see the upper leaf.
So he’d elevate his body some,
but his glance was always brief.
Many friendly insects climbed
and landed on close leafs.
They thought they might befriend him,
but were wrong in there beliefs.
He saw them as a safety threat,
and close-landing was his cue,
to cower in his leafy home,
and sigh at their departure, “Phew!”
There was another caterpillar,
who crawled onto his leaf.
“You’re missing out on grassy lands,
but I’m not here to give you grief.”
The caterpillar soon declared,
“There’s nothing for me there.”
The other said, “You don’t know...
So, I propose a dare:”
“Leave the leaf and follow me.
You will enjoy the view.
You have to learn to take life’s risks
and quit wallowing in ‘phews’.”
He decided to adventure
with his bold and newfound mate.
He soon enjoyed new plants and vines,
but his fears were still so great.
Daily they explored new lands,
but the one still spoke of danger.
His friend soon called him “Phew”
because it was his ‘break’ from strangers.
“The open world shouldn’t scare you such,”
One day he said to Phew.
“Your isolation isn’t good,
and your friends are far too few.”
Phew didn’t give this too much thought
until his friend he could not find.
He had not shown up to explore.
“Surely, it hadn’t slipped his mind.”
After building inches of great courage,
Phew crawled down from his leaf.
“If only I can find my friend,
I’ll be glad to “phew” at that relief.”
So on his journey he began,
but halfway through the plight,
He found he could not focus,
as much as he would fight.
Out of some compelling force
he crawled up on milkweed.
He started spinning something silk,
and from doing couldn’t be freed.
He was so confused and truly scared,
and sorrowfully he prayed,
“God I want to find my friend;
not hang here from this blade.”
Days and weeks had come and gone,
and soon his body was all wrapped.
This silken structure was so tight,
and Phew never felt so trapped.
He tried and tried to move within,
but this structure was so tight.
His body now began to ache,
and he couldn’t see without much light.
“God, I do not understand!
What’s happening to me now?
I’m confined so much and hurt so bad.
Why this pain do you allow?”
So on and on his struggle went.
Phew could feel new body parts.
“My body feels so cold and damp,
but I hear beating in my heart?”
Soon Phew began to lose his hope
of ever breaking free.
Until one day Phew could slightly move;
So he smiled with some glee.
Soon his new, long legs broke through,
and he teetered a bit in weight.
“What are these two large packs
that flutter in color great?”
Soon Phew found them carrying him,
and he landed on a leaf.
He heard a voice he knew so well
and smiled in sheer relief.
He finally found his long, lost friend!
“Thank God my prayers were heard!
Oh, Praise God for such a day,
for my Savior heard my words!”
Phew proudly walked up to his friend;
His confidence brightly hued.
“No more entrapment,” he said.
“No more seclusion…phew!”

Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
