Expecting to find spilled cereal, my spirit rejoiced, for this wasn’t the case. Scanning the living room, I searched for my one-year old. Phew! Matt safely busied himself with foam blocks.
“What’s the matter, Luke?”
Intense, blue eyes swam with enthusiasm. “Did you know Jesus came to diaper us?”
“Huh?” I asked - Scooby Doo style - failing to suppress my grin. “Where did you get that idea?”
“The man on the radio sang it,” he answered matter-of-fact.
Laughter erupted despite my best efforts to refrain. “No, honey…the song does sound like - Jesus came to diaper us - but the singer is really singing Jesus came to die for us.”
Luke studied me. “Huh?” He asked.
Recognizing a teachable moment, I pulled him onto my lap. Snuggling in my arms, we read about Jesus death and resurrection from the Children’s Bible.
After answering a few of his questions, I couldn’t help but wonder how many times my heavenly father longs for me to “climb up and snuggle in his arms.” How many teachable moments and blessings from the Lord have I forfeited simply because I didn’t come and sit at his feet? (Luke 10:39-42) I realized the days I fail to prioritize time with him by reading his Word – the Bible - and communing with him through prayer, I’m the one who inevitably misses out.
Throughout the remainder of the day, however, I found myself chuckling about Luke’s interpretation of the song he heard, “God came to diaper us.”
Breaking through my haze of exhaustion and busyness (while changing Matt’s diaper,) God seized this teachable moment for me. This time, hearing his still small voice, I mentally crawled up on my Savior’s lap and listened. He lovingly reaffirmed these important truths.
• As my baby is dependent upon me, so am I with my Savior, Jesus Christ.
John 15:5 (NIV) I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
Philippians 4:13 (NIV) I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
• My two small boys depend upon their daddy and mommy. They don’t question every decision we make because they know we’re capable to care and provide for them. They simply trust and feel safe around us. Likewise, it should be enough to know God loves me and provides a means of forgiveness through his perfect, sinless son, Jesus. I don’t need to unravel all the mysteries of the universe to believe and trust God. He gives enough evidence through his Word – the Bible - and his amazing creation for me to know He exists and is good.
Mark 10:14b-16 (NIV) “…Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he (Jesus) took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.
• As my baby is helpless to change his own diaper and clean himself, I’m also helpless to cleanse myself inwardly from my sins.
Jeremiah 33:8 (NIV) - I will cleanse them from all the sin they have committed against me and will forgive all their sins of rebellion against me.
Psalm 51:2 (NIV) - Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
Isaiah 1:18b (NIV) - Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.
Tossing Matt’s diaper in the Diaper Genie, Luke stormed into the bedroom.
“Mommy, mommy!” He squealed, “Our song – it’s playing on the radio!”
Joining him in the living room, we listened carefully to the words.
Huh? I thought. Did I really hear that right?
I stared blankly at Luke. The words did sound like, “Jesus came to diaper us.”
Luke grinned and gave me a knowing wink. Hmm…wonder who’s laughing now?
