She couldn't bear to return to Church without him. The thought of sitting in the pew without her beloved Mark beside her was just too much.
Mae became a recluse. For over a year she stayed indoors and became more and more depressed. Finally her mental state had deteriorated to the stage where she needed hospitalization.
Mae spent six months in a psychiatric ward. She did not respond to the treatment.
One day she had a visit from an old friend. Her friend had brought Mae a gift. It was a brown prayer shawl. Mae put the shawl on. Immediately her appearance changed. She smiled and started to pray. She told her friend that wearing the shawl made her feel loved, warm and close to God.
The Doctors were astounded by the change in Mae. It seemed that the brown prayer shawl had unlocked her mind and healed her from the depression.
Mae went home soon after she received the gift of the brown prayer shawl.
Mae started attending Church services again. She started a knitting club in the Church. She had organised a group of people and they knitted prayer shawls. The shawls were all different colours. Mae always used brown wool and she still wears her brown prayer shawl. The prayer shawls are sent to people who are ill. So from that gift of one brown prayer shawl many more people are blessed
