The other night I watched a DVD with Louis Giglio expounding on the wonders of the Milky Way. Our planet such an infinitesimally small dot in the galaxy. How could it be that the amazing Creator should choose such a pin-prick upon which to set His love? Of all the planets, that He should have prepared Earth to be at just the right distance from the sun, that we should neither freeze nor fry! That He set the moon, that glowing orange lamp before me, in the perfect place to draw the tides. And by those predictable ebbs and flows, the fishermen pace their lives. Indeed, everything on Earth is exactly as required in order that life might be sustained. What a mind must hold this all together! Wisdom, understanding, way off the scale of man!
And then I watched another DVD, this time Giglio recounting the incredible facts of the human body. The God so big that He holds the stars in His hand and scatters them abroad as a farmer sows seed, this God is the One who put together the intricacies of the human eye, in the child growing in his mother's womb. The statistics again bedazzle and confound, but the one I remember is the amount of capillaries in a single person. "Put them end to end, and they would go to the moon three times". I gaze again at the orange balloon in the sky, and then at my hands in the shimmering light. This little body, not even reaching to the trees, contains blood vessels that would stretch to that golden moon! And not just once, but three times! How can it be? What awe-inspiring architecture is this, to pack so much into such a small space!
The orange moon is rising above me. It pierces the blackness with its reflected light, every beam that it radiates coming from the sun. Is that not a picture of us too? Every bit of good that is seen in us is but a reflection of the pool of good originating at the Source? We are so small, less than a dot on a minuscule planet, in a seemingly-limitless universe. And yet within each of us is such a manifold display of Creator care, not because we merit it but because He is so big. So big, to play marbles with the stars, and so big, to knit us together with microscopic finesse. With the Psalmist (Psalm 8:4 ESV), I would indeed say: "What is man that You are mindful of him?" And yet too, the orange-cheese moon and the sprinkling of silver sequins in the canopy, reminds me that to Him we are precious, even more than glittering jewels or vast galaxies that He fingers. I close my eyes, awed by such a thought – that the Creator of such magnitude deftly wound miles of capillaries into me. And more, that He let the blood vessels of His most Beloved be torn and broken ... for us little specks on a tiny blink in His creation.
Rise up, orange moon, and shine on in brilliance! You point me to Him, and for that I am grateful.
