It all started on a Sunday evening in late October. Brandon began throwing up and couldn’t keep anything down. I had a conversation with my daughter, Wendi.
“Mom, I was just calling to ask you and Dad to pray for Brandon.” Wendi said. I could tell by her voice that something was very wrong.
“Sure, what’s up?” I asked.
“Well, he’s been throwing up all evening. He just can’t seem to keep anything down.” She said.
“Have you given him anything for his stomach?”
“Yes, he just threw it up.”
“Don’t let him get dehydrated, Wendi, you know how fast that can happen with little ones”
“Yes, I know, and if he isn’t better soon, I’ll take him to the doctor.”
“Ok, well, Dad and I will pray right now. Call me and let me know how he’s doing.” I said.
“I will, Mom.” she said.
“Love you, Mom.”
“Love you too, give him a hug for us.”
I hung up the phone and immediately went to my husband and we prayed for Brandon.
Early the next morning, Wendi took Brandon to their family doctor. After Dr. Smith examined him he told her that Brandon would have to be admitted into the hospital immediately because he was dehydrated.
What happened when they got to the hospital is a case of a divine appointment. Two nurses came into the room to help Brandon get settled in. The first nurse picked Brandon up in her arms and turned to Wendi and asked,
“Does he have diabetes?”
“Not that I know of.” Wendi replied.
The first nurse then turned to the second nurse and said “ I think this child is in diabetic keto acidosis. His breath smells fruity. We better check is blood sugar right away.”
After contacting Dr. Smith and getting the orders to check his blood sugar they did so and found that his blood sugar count was 1300. An insulin drip was started immediately to bring his blood sugar back to normal. It had to be done slowly to prevent damage to his organs. Only time would tell if any of them were damaged. He wasn’t actually dehydrated, he was suffering the effects of his blood sugar being so high.
What Wendi thought was just a virus turned out to be a life threatening disease, type one diabetes. We were told later that if treatment had been delayed another two hours we would have lost him.
He had no damage to his organs from his blood sugar being so high. He learned to check his own blood sugar and until about a year ago, he gave his own shots. He’s now on an insulin pump that has made his life and the lives of those around him a lot simpler.
A few days after he got out of the hospital, I went to see him and I watched as he colored a picture.
“What are you coloring Brandon?” I asked.
“A turtle in a pond.” He replied.
“Why are you coloring it all in different shades of green?”
“Because, green is definitely my favorite color.” He said with the biggest smile.
So green definitely reminds me of the blessing of my grandson Brandon and the divine appointment God arranged with a nurse that recognized a symptom that might have gone unnoticed by someone else. May we never miss those divine appointments that God has set up for us.

When my dad's blood sugars were first tested, they were off the charts. He was almost at comotose stage.
I would agree that launching right into the action in the second paragraph would have gone great because of the dialog between mother and daughter.
This story hit home, glad for the happy ending. Keep writing!
