“Oh great.” Midnight, a sleek long haired black cat thought. “It’s Samhain. Tonight’s going to be a long one.”.”
Helena, clad in an earth tone robe with symbols denoting her Wiccan beliefs, lifted a black and leopard print vinyl cat carrier with stickers similar to those she wore on her robe. “Midnight, come on girl, out from under the couch. It’s time for the Samhain Sabbat at our coven and you wouldn’t want Mommy to be late would you?”
“I’d rather we stayed home and you passed out candy to the small humans who dress up in funny clothes. Or even just watched a good movie like Aristocats or even Garfield cartoons.”
As Midnight dug her claws in to the carpeting to keep from going in the cat carrier Helena continued to talk as if she expected Midnight to answer in English. “Now you know this is an important Sabbat. We need to be there to pay proper respect to the spirits of the dead. I’ve even invited the spirit of my Aunt Esmerelda.” With a final tug on the recalcitrant feline, Helena began to move Midnight in to the carrier.
“No, Lord, please no!” Midnight prayed as she was pushed into the soft sided carrier, “Lord, if there was even a time I prayed I could talk it is now!” Unfortunately, her prayer came out as a squawk of protest which Helena took to mean that she didn’t want to get in the carrier. She was right, but as she tried to soothe Midnight with fish flavored cat treats, she didn’t understand the real reason.
Walking out to her shiny black Prius Helena tried to continue to reassure Midnight it was only a short ride and she’d be alright.
“Father, could you just once let me be understood by Your wayward human daughter. Lord, even if she at first thought I was speaking like a witch’s familiar as in legends, it would be worth it for her to understand, as I do, the truth about Your sovereign nature and all that You’ve done for the earth. That she, as a human, needs a Savior, and not this false spirit worship.”
Midnight had been to far too many Sabbats with Helena and knew the route to the home where the coven Helena belonged to almost as well as she did. In a few minutes the Prius joined a group of cars ranging from compacts to minivans parked at a farm just outside of town. Midnight’s sensitive nose picked up the scents of several other cats that she’d gotten to know from other visits here, and when the carrier was opened wove her way to a bowl of tuna the hostess had set out and ate briefly with the other cats. At one point a woman who’d brought a new orange and grey kitten to the Sabbat said, “Look at the cats. The way they’re meowing you could almost think they were praying to the goddess.”
If she’d understood the cats she would have heard from a cat with short white fur on his head and sleek coal black markings from his neck to his, tail excepting his brown rear paws and white front paws named Darrin.
“Midnight, as we’ve already broken tuna together would you lead us in prayer?”
“Lord, we thank You for the fellowship, even under the circumstances. Thank You for this fish. And we welcome a newcomer to our prayer circle tonight. Keep Princess and the rest of us safe and in Your spirit tonight and beyond. In Your precious and holy name, Amen.”
