Previous Challenge Entry (Level 1 – Beginner)
Topic: Red (10/01/09)
"If you were a crayon, what color would you be?" The question popped out at Lilly. She couldn't believe her eyes; this kind of question, in a resume? Wow, times sure are changing. When since did this matter in applying for a job? She chuckled; surely this was an easy answer. She scrawled with her pencil the color "yellow". On to the next question, "What was your last answer, and why did you choose it?" Puzzled, she stared at the question before her. This was strange. Oh well. Quickly she wrote, "It's happy." A louder laugh escaped from her lips this time; so much for being serious when applying for a job. Other people in the room looked at her quizzically, probably thinking, "Shush lady! Some of us are applying for a job, and some of us are serious about it too."

No matter. She continued to the next question. "Did you answer truthfully to the previous two questions?" Even more puzzled she began to write "yes". Then she scanned back up, the answers, they were pretty lame. She needed this job. No telling what would happen if she did not get it. Scrunching her forehead in deep thought, she stared at the wall on the other side of the room. Its color was a pale powdery blue. Not her kind of color honestly; too slow and sad almost. She turned her head slowly, as if waiting for a light bulb appear above her head with the correct answer. Nothing. She thought to herself and sighed. I’ll come back to the question in a bit. Hopefully I’ll have an idea then.

She moved on to all of the serious questions. How many other jobs have you had? What were they? Why did you leave? Are you a criminal? If so, state which crime and why. The list went on and on. The clock on the wall behind her ticked annoyingly, among the silence. An old woman sat in the corner of the room, her head bowed staring at the paper in front of her, she almost looked as if she was about to fall to sleep.

The grey and black speckled carpet made Lilly dizzy. Who would have thought applying for a job was so tiring? She’d been there for a whole hour and felt as though it had been countless hours.

Now that all of the other questions were answered, she was left with the three most interesting and puzzling questions of them all. Her eyes scrolled up to the first one, “If you were a crayon, what color would you be?” She looked around, hoping for something to pop out at her, again, and hopefully for the last time. Then she saw it, a little red cross hanging by the reception counter. The color intrigued her. She couldn’t help herself but to go to it, almost as if it had some kind of magnetizing affect on her.

"What is this for? She blurted, pointing to it with her slender hand.

"It's a red cross. What else?" The receptionist at the counter raised an eyebrow in obvious distaste at Lilly's question.

Seeing that this was going to go no where, Lilly returned to her original seat. She picked up the clipboard with her resume securely fastened. "If I could be a crayon, what color would I be?" She whispered to herself. Without hesitation, she scrawled the one word, "red". This surely was the correct one. It is neither happy-go-lucky, nor subtle like the pale blue on the wall. Vibrant it is. The next question was a cinch.

“What was your last answer, and why did you choose it?" After studying it for a moment, she began to write: "The color red isn't just a color you see everywhere. It has both the meaning of passion and anger. In ways, the meaning of it can be quite puzzling. It also is the color of blood. But to me, not just any blood. The blood of Jesus; every time I look at the color, it could, in some way remind me of Him and His love which was poured out on that day for all mankind. This is what it means to me. And every day I hope to be covered in His blood, for I surely could not live without it." After she wrote that, she sighed of relief. Now she could definitely answer the following question with "yes" and know it is the truth.

I love the name Lilly, so your title really appealed to me.

I found the situation strange and unlikely, and would have liked some explanation: what kind of job was she applying for? Why did they ask such unusual questions?

You made me think, though: How would I answer such a question? Good job with that.

This was interesting. I would have giggled at those questions, too:) There was one sentence that tripped me up that you need to work on

I enjoyed reading this. With the questions they ask on Dr.'s forms these days, nothing surprises me!
Interesting question and I loved the answers. My answer at the end would have been an definite YES!

Excellent effort. I think that the questions might have be italicized for an easier reading flow. I really enjoyed the set up for the color choice. Your final paragraph was beautifully written. Great work! I hope this does well!
