My mummy is beautiful. She has lovely long hair, and its curly. I wish I had curly hair, but mine’s just straight. I asked her could I have curly hair and she just laughed and said maybe when I was older. The funny thing is, she spends ages making it straight, but it’s nicest when she’s just washed it and its wet and starting to curl up round the edges. She wraps a towel round her head when she comes out of the shower. I’m going to do that when I grow up. I tried it once but the towel kept falling off.
I wish I could draw like my mummy. She draws brilliant horses. She says mine are good as well, but I know they’re not. I’m just saying, I don’t mind. My cats are good, but not my horses. They look a bit silly. But she says they’re lovely and gives me a kiss and sticks my pictures on the fridge anyway. She can draw hearts really well – I can’t, but she says I just need to practice, ‘cos they’re tricky.
I’m going to be an artist when I grow up. Mummy does something boring with sums, so I don’t want to have her job. But I do want to be clever like her. She’s very clever and does really hard stuff on her computer. Sometimes she lets me sit on her lap while she’s working and I can see what’s she’s doing. But then she gets annoyed because she ‘can’t concentrate properly’ so I have to go and play. I understand she needs to work, and she always comes and plays with me when she’s finished, so I don’t mind.
Sometimes I hear mummy singing in the kitchen – I wish I could sing like her. She sings about Jesus, but I don’t understand the words. I know some of the songs from church. When I’m grown up, I’m going to sing those songs. I’ll find out what the words mean as well. She sings in the car sometimes, which is a bit embarrassing, ‘cos people can see. It doesn’t mean I don’t love her, I’m just a bit embarrassed by her – I’m just saying.
When she’s getting ready to go out, she takes ages. Daddy shouts at her to hurry up. But she puts on make-up and jewellery and lovely high heeled shoes. I sit on the bed and watch her. I’m going to wear high-heeled shoes when I grow up. I watch her put on make-up and she sometimes lets me put on her blusher. She puts on her perfume and then sprays some on my wrist. ‘Rub your wrists together’ she says. She’s very glamorous. I bet they’re going to some really glamorous party, and they’re going to drink wine in a posh glass, like people on TV do. I’m not allowed wine, not ever. Daddy says you have to be thirty to drink wine. That’s really old.
Sometimes mummy gets grumpy with me. She shouts at me. She gets headaches and needs a cup of tea. And she rushes my bedtime story sometimes. She reads really quick and misses out words. She thinks I don’t know she does it, but I do. She just wants to get back downstairs, because she’s tired. I’m not complaining, I’m just saying. But she always kisses me goodnight and gives me a big hug, so I know she loves me. And she tucks me up really cosy, and she gives my teddy a kiss. And we say a prayer to Jesus as well. Sometimes she forgets, so when she’s gone, I talk to Jesus in the dark and ask him to make her remember next time. She goes to bed ages after me. When I grow up, I’m going to be like her, and go to bed at midnight. I wonder what she’s doing to be up so late. She said once she does her ironing, and made a face. I think she must be doing really exciting things. Sometimes, when I’m lying in bed, I listen carefully and I can hear her and daddy talking in the kitchen. Sometimes they get shouty with each other, which I don’t like, but mostly they laugh a lot, and that gives me a happy feeling inside. One day, I’m going to be a mummy, just like her.
