Childhood can be an exciting, innocent, pleasant time. It can also be a difficult, sad and painful time. Some children grow up happily in wonderful families. Other children grow up in dysfunctional families, which can be detrimental to their young lives. The Christian family has the potential to be the foundation for raising well balanced, responsible, moral children. Children can learn how to defeat the temptations of a world of sin and wickedness. They can also learn how to stay away from the troubles brought up by all the ills of the world. (Pro. 1:8-19) Children can have a wonderful childhood and a great adult life if parents really follow the teachings of the Bible. Children need parents that provide for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the children (2 Corinthians 12:14).
For one thing, children need to learn about the great thing it is to live with a traditional, heterosexual family. Each family is led by a man and a woman. They are a couple of loving, educative, supportive, caring parents enthralled in all the aspects of the children’s lives (Proverbs 22:6). They are a father who teaches the boys how to be men and a woman who teaches the girls how to be women.
Secondly, the little ones look after their parents as their best role models. Good Christian parents do not smoke, get drunk or use drugs; therefore, the children are unlikely to be substance abusers (Ephesians 5:18). These parents know that the body is the temple of God, so they respect it (1 Corinthians 6:19). They are moral, ethical and strive for justice. For example, the children can learn to be honest individuals by watching the parents return extra money given by a cashier. Another example is when the children witness their parents being courteous and polite to the people at the carwash. (Ephesians 4:31). Yet another example is when they see their parents abstaining from rage or bad attitudes, even though the situation can be frustrating . Children see their parents giving money to the church and to charities (Deut. 14:22-23) (Deut. 15:7-11). (Matthew 6:2-4)
Thirdly, the children get the opportunity to be a member of a team and to learn about teamwork, division of labor and group dynamics (Ecc. 4:9-12). Each member of the family takes part on the running of the home, assuming the responsibility that specific jobs entail. For instance, the daughter might be assigned to wash the dishes, while the son’s task is to take out the garbage. The father gladly mows the lawn, while the mother happily cooks a delicious meal (Ecc.3:9-14).
Finally, the children learn to love God from their mothers and fathers. Their mothers and fathers have faith in Him and are obedient to Him (Ecc. 12:13). They follow God’s rules and try not to engage in anything that is offensive to Him (Matthew 16:6). The entire family attends church regularly and believe that the Bible is the word of God (2Peter 1:20, 21). They believe that Jesus is God (John 1:1). They worship and praise God with all their hearts (Psalm 150) (Rev.22:8,9). They do not have fear of anything because they trust the Lord ( Isaiah 41:10) and know that the Holy Spirit will help them (John 14:26). Attending church also placates the children’s need to belong; thereby. making them unsusceptible to join gangs.
A Christian family can foster the welfare of the children. It can teach them to stay away from gangs, drugs, alcohol , cigarettes, and a life of crime when they need it the most: in their childhood.
