“Settle down and go sit in your seats!” she ordered, amazed when she was quickly obeyed.
“Tan we dye da eggs now, Mama?” Three year old Hannah bounced in her booster seat.
“We gotta wait for the dye to ‘solve.” Four year old Jeremiah told her.
“Dissolve.” Five year old Kevin corrected importantly. “Right, Mama? It’s dissolve…not ‘solve.”
“I can say ‘solve if I wanna.” Jeremiah stated firmly.
“Mama…”
Caitlin looked sternly as her oldest son. “That’s enough. When you were four you didn’t say all your words just right either.”
She noted thankfully that the dye was dissolved. “Okay guys! Let’s dye eggs!”
A few minutes later each cup had an egg soaking while Caitlin swiped at the inevitable splashes of color on the tabletop.
Jeremiah leaned over his chosen cup to get a closer look at his egg. He wrinkled his nose and pulled back. “It smells ucky.”
“That’s the vinegar. It helps the color soak into the eggshell better.” Caitlin informed him.
Kevin piped up. “My Sunday School teacher said the bad people gave Jesus a drink of vinegar when he was on the cross.”
“Yes, they did.” Caitlin was glad to learn that her son was absorbing something from his Sunday School class other than who had the coolest bike. “Jesus was thirsty, but the people gave Him vinegar instead of water.”
“Eew!” Jeremiah made a gagging sound. “Ucky!”
“Ucky!” Hannah chimed in with a sputter.
“Oh, Hannah!” Caitlin made a dash for Hannah’s cup of egg dye as the little girl shoved it forcefully away from her, an unmistakable stream of purple dye running from her mouth.
“Why did you drink that?” Caitlin demanded, unable to hide her smile at the look of disgust on her tiny daughter’s face.
“Desus dwinked it.” Hannah defended herself innocently.
Caitlin burst out laughing and gave her daughter a hug. As she wiped up Hannah’s now hopelessly stained dress, she sent up a prayer of thanksgiving for priceless moments such as these.
