I lay back that Autumn afternoon in the sun on several hay bales beside the orchard. Mornings and evenings were cool, pointing the weathervane towards winter. Mother, our beloved cat who had adopted us, climbed up the hay bales and crawled onto my stomach and chest, purring and drooling her pleasure. We relaxed there together in a realized perfect moment.
I thought of the sun 93 million miles away. How was it that Mother and I were perfectly comfortable, perfectly warmed this Fall day, this afternoon moment? It seemed like some kind of miracle. Brian Swimme, cosmologist, tells me, “The Sun, each second, transforms four million tons of itself into light. Each second a huge chunk of the Sun vanishes into radiant energy that soars away in all directions. Earth, is one planet moving around one star, which itself is one of the 300 billion stars of the Milky Way Galaxy, which is one of a trillion galaxies in the wide universe.” (1.)
Yes, I think there’s more than one miracle here this perfect Fall afternoon and Mother knows too.
