Diana drew the curtains across the windows and called her three children to sit with her by the fireside. Mary, the eldest was seven, John five and baby Julie was just two. George, her husband, had called a few minutes ago to say he could not get home as the roads were blocked with snow. He was going to stay with one of his workmates.
Diana could hear the wind howling outside and knew that before long the snow storm might hit them too. How she wished George was with her. Silently she asked the Lord to keep them safe, then she told the children that their Daddy would not be home that night and that God would take care of them.
John began to cry and Mary did not look too happy. Only little Julie seemed unaware of the storm outside.
“I’ll fix you a nice chocolate drink and some biscuits and then we’ll have a story before you go up to bed,” she said to them.
Soon they were all enjoying the bedtime snack.
Then Diana began the story.
“Paul was a missionary preacher. We read about him in the Bible. He travelled all over the country telling people about the love of God and how Jesus had died on the cross to save them from sin.
“But Paul had lots of enemies and one day they captured him and put him in prison. After more than two years in prison he was sent to the city of Rome for trial, but Rome was a long way away across miles and miles of sea. There were no aeroplanes in those days, only ships. These were ships with big sails so the wind could blow them along.
“Paul was put on a ship with other passengers. It was winter time and Paul warned the captain of the ship that winter storms were coming, with strong winds and rain. He said they should wait until the winter was over. But the captain would not listen and so they set out.
“Before long strong winds began to blow and the rains came tumbling down. The ship was tossed up and down, up and down, and everyone was afraid, except Paul. He knew God wanted him to go to Rome and that He would take care of him. He told the passengers and sailors that God had told him none of them would die and that he believed what God said. They would all be safe.
“The winds blew and blew and the ship was washed on to some rocks and began to break up. The people had to get into the water and swim to the shore, many of them holding on to planks of wood from the ship.
“Just like Paul had said they were all safe.
“The people on the island where they landed, took care of them, building a fire so that they could dry themselves and their clothes.
“Paul told them that it was God who had saved them. He had kept His promise. I am sure He must have told them about Jesus and His love.”
Diana paused for a moment as she came to the end of the story. The children were contented now and sleepy eyed.
“You know,” she said to them, “it is the same God who took care of Paul who is with us here just now. He has promised never to leave us. He will watch over us as we go to bed and He will be with Daddy too and keep him safe. Let us each pray to Him now. Mary you be first.”
“Dear God, thank You for the story. Thank you for taking care of Paul. Please take care of us tonight. Amen.”
“Dear Jesus,” John said, “help Daddy to come home safe. Thank You Jesus. I love You.”
Little Julie could not say much, but she did know how to say Amen and did so quite strongly.
“Thank you God,” Diana prayed, “for being with us as You have promised. Keep us all safe through the storm tonight. Bless Mary, John and Julie, and help them not to be afraid. Be with Daddy too and bring him home safely tomorrow. Amen.”
Outside the wind was howling and the rain was beating against the window panes, but inside the little family was happy. Diana and her children were content to know that God was with them and would take care of them.
