Winter

As it began to snow harder, the anticipation of no school the next day was like the thickening white blanket beginning to form across the back yard. Plans of sleeping late and playing in the snow had already begun to swirl in the thoughts of both my kids. Yet, I knew what would really happen the next day. They both would rise early just to watch the news to see their school name scroll across the bottom of the television screen. They would sit in front of the television for a few hours then head out covered from head to toe in thick layers of clothing. Clothing that isn’t really suitable for snow but, as far as, warm clothing goes, it is all we have. What are snow boots anyway? Outside, they will make snow angels, have snowball fights, and attempt to build a snowman. But because we stay in the part of the country where we rarely see snow, our snowman building skills are weak. At least for the snow angels and snowball fights, that’s another story. You can find the most beautiful snow angels anywhere. That’s because my kids are creatively brilliant. They get that from me. Yeah, right! After a while of all this creative fun, they will head back in only to ask for hot chocolate in the attempt to warm up for a few minutes. Then, when their toes, noses and hands have thawed out, they will head back out again to only repeat the same cycle over and over until their dad gets home from work. Then, the real fun begins. It has always been that way. In the past two or three snowfalls we have had in a period of ten years, the kids have always looked forward to the time when their dad joins them because he has always made times like this more exciting, more fun. Unlike me of course, I’ve always been concerned whether they are getting too cold or if their socks are too wet, etc. You know, concerned about all the things that really doesn’t mean as much, because the point here is that everyone will have an amazing time, a time that will mean more to them when they get older. So, because I know all of this, I’ll try to keep in mind to not sweat the small stuff and just let it be. I’ll try to learn from my husband what it means to let go of the small stuff and remember that family times like this will come more often than the occasional snowfall if I allow myself to enjoy the here and now instead of worrying about what will probably never happen.
