Spring is a time for birth and rebirth. Summer is only a new beginning. Since May, our child has starting discovering his world. He is discovering his teeth, feet, arms, legs, fingers, and everything else about himself. He is also beginning to discover the world around him. I have discovered that my favorite word is now “No!” I am starting to become a little like my mother. (I’ll admit that!)
In June, we take our first vacation as parents. Our dear son makes it most of the car ride without a meltdown. About 30 minutes from our overnight destination, Tom-Tom decides he wants out of his car seat. Let the wailing begin. Even a quick stop at the Florida rest area does not suffice him for long. He is tired of riding.
We make it to our overnight destination, Chipley, Florida. Tom-Tom ends up sleeping with us because we have a king size bed. Unfortunately, the pack-n-play is buried underneath our camping supplies. We can rough it for one night. Tom-Tom enjoys rolling in the floor and scooting underneath things.
The next day we make it to St. Andrews State Park in beautiful Panama City, Florida. After setting up camp sites, we decide to take our son and his two cousins down to the beach. Our niece and nephew both enjoy the beach. This is Tom-Tom’s first beach visit. Will the experience be priceless or horrible?
The experience is priceless. Pictures are taken of all three kids just as soon as we make it to the beach. Pictures take a few minutes because Tom-Tom keeps trying to eat the sand. Finally, we make it down to the water. Holding our son up by his hands, Tom-Tom feels the ocean water for the first time. He scowls for a moment and looks down. Then he smiles, lifts his legs, and puts them back in the water. Clearly, he is going to enjoy this.
The next few days are a whirlwind. We track down a float, and Tom-Tom lazes around in the water with us. We take him through the Mirror Maze at Pier Point and the outdoor maze. He enjoys the Mirror Maze as it is in the dark with strobe like lights. He enjoys the music, and he grins and patty-cakes the whole time we are inside the maze. There are cameras everywhere. The hostesses tell us they have never seen a baby enjoy the maze so much.
Sadly, our trip comes to an end. We return home on Sunday. Yet, we know we still have almost two months of summer left. Tom-Tom will be crawling, if not walking, by the end of it. (He starts crawling 4th of July holiday weekend.) Now, it is on to the last summer event before fall, an August birthday for a one-year-old.
