As I walked quietly toward my destination, I anticipated a time of quiet relaxation and having a time of communion with the Lord. I had chosen my place of quiet rest beside a pond, away from the hustle and bustle of energetic campers. The week of being camp counselor was rewarding, but also very trying as well as tiring. I longed to get away for a time of rest and refreshing my spirit in the Lord. Now I had the prefect opportunity to have my own little quiet time.
Just as I sat down on the grass beside the pond and opened my Bible, I noticed a young girl from my cabin wandering my way. She was a girl I had met at the youth center in our local community, whom I had invited to camp. “Now what is she doing down here”, I wondered, as she entered my domain. She walked to the edge of the pond then turned around and looked at me. She had that look in her eyes that said she needed someone to talk to. The devotion shared that morning by one of the other counselors came to my mind.
The devotion was on Matthew 14:13-16.
He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities.
And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.
When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food."
But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat”.
I knew that the Holy Spirit had brought these verses to my mind and I knew what I must do. I was moved with compassion and invited her to come over and sit down beside me. It provided a wonderful opportunity to share the love of Jesus with her and what He has done for us. As I shared my quiet retreat with someone in need, Jesus blessed me richly for it. We are comforted and strengthened not only for ourselves, but to comfort and strengthen those in need. Jesus meets our needs that we might meet the needs of others.
