“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good.” Genesis 1:1-4b
From the very beginning, God’s answer to formless, empty, darkness was to create light. Even to this day, his answer for the formless and empty and dark places in our lives is to create light. John 1:4-5 says, “The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”
Satan came to steal, kill and destroy. Satan loves to keep his works hidden in the dark. When we are afraid, ashamed or just plain enjoying certain sinful actions we tend to keep those things secret. By doing this we are we are abiding in the darkness. In this way Satan is free to continue in his evil works of bringing death; in this way we are protecting him.
I have often found that when I have done something I am ashamed of, I tend to focus on that and I keep reliving it trying to come up with a way of justifying it or altering the consequences. It becomes a bondage to me. Even when I realize I need help I have become so afraid of this thing that I can’t bear to tell someone. This is where Satan tells us that if we tell someone they will react and reject us. If we believe his lies we will continue to keep it a secret. Certainly we need to have wisdom in deciding whom to tell but tell we must if we ever want to be free. Many times I have confessed something to someone fully expecting that my whole world would come to an end. I work up the courage and tell my tale. I sit there waiting for the shoe to drop. When I have told sincere mature Christians without fail the shoe never dropped. By making confession I have brought the dark deed into the light. In the natural we know that light removes darkness, darkness can never overtake a light source. The same is true in the spiritual. When sin is exposed to the Light, it can never remain. Satan’s hold can now be broken because his works have been exposed. There can now be forgiveness and cleansing.
The answer for anyone’s emptiness, hopelessness or darkness is the same as on that very first day. The Spirit of God is hovering. When we can see by the light, darkness no longer holds power over us. We are able to see that we are not alone, that others struggle. We are able to see that Jesus has provided everything we need to overcome; be it healing, deliverance, forgiveness or faith. The answer to darkness is light, and darkness can never overtake the light.

I've found that when writing devotionals or Bible studies, you can 'hook' your readers more with a personal anecdote or real-life example. Something to consider for the future.
