I thought I was up for the challenge; not realizing that I wasn’t until I was full speed ahead.
I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I was ready for marriage. So when Daniel proposed without hesitation, I replied “YES”. Before long, we were making plans for our big day.
On the morning of our wedding day, there were several snags as is the case with most weddings but we were determined not to allow anything spoil this day for us. Family, friends and well wishers turned out to witness our exchange of vows and well into the evening, they celebrated with us over a scrumptious meal and fine music.
Somewhere into our second year of marriage, something seemed to go terribly wrong. Our schedules became very tight and there was hardly enough time for each other. Between our new addition to the family, our careers and what seemed to be the pursuit of separate goals, it was as if everything was spinning out of control. Never could I have imagined something appearing so glamorous from the outside being such an enormous task.
We decided that in order for this to work, we would have to seek counseling. We immediately contacted our Youth Pastor who accepted our appointment without hesitation. On the morning we entered his peaceful office, I was so overwhelmed that instantly, I started weeping. When we were both through explaining our concerns, he placed his arms around us and smiled. “Welcome to the world of marriage”, he said, both to our surprise and disbelief.
By the time he got through praying for us and explaining what he meant by his earlier statement, we realized that ours was just like any other marriage that just needed a time out; a “retreat” so to speak.
Right there in his office we called our parents and asked them to take care of Danielle for the weekend as we needed some quiet time away.
When we arrived at the Villa on the Island of Abaco that weekend, it was as if we fell in love all over again. We talked well into the wee hours of the morning, putting things into perspective where our marriage was concerned. By the time we left, we were both changed and challenged individuals. One thing was certain, we were prepared to do whatever it took to keep our marriage from becoming another statistic. We realized that we were in a binding covenant which meant; there’s was just no easy way out.
Today, ten years into our marriage and three more little ones added, we have learned to put our trust in the Almighty God for all the answers. For we realize that we are imperfect, but we serve a perfect God who has perfect answers to the most imperfect situations.
