She was only a bright eyed, five year old tom-boy the first time she ever walked through them. She clung to her Mother’s hand as though it were a lifesaver keeping her from drowning from all the waves of stares that were focused on them. She felt so out of place there and wanted so desperately to turn and run out the doors that had now quit swaying back and forth; making no cracks that she could escape through. She recalled the tire swing she had seen just outside. There she could avoid all the glares and whispers that seemed to be toward her Mother, whom had now made her way past the pews, stopping just shy of the pulpit. Amber remembered how she felt as she looked up at a man that seemed to be a gentle giant with silvery, gray hair and a loud stern voice. Amber was not sure what was going on at the time, but she knew from that day on that somehow her Mother seemed to be different. It was a good different.
Amber and her Mother had a family now that loved them both. Before then, they had no one. She had made friends with all the other little girls, but she always felt she was different somehow. The girls seemed too frilly and foolish to her. She was always drawn to the boys hanging out in the trees, catching the bumpy frogs that made their way up from the creek. She made a dear friend with a little boy named Jeremiah who was just a few years younger than her. He seemed to always look pale, with circles as dark as the ash from a burning log under his eyes. Jeremiah was born with a bad heart and was told he would not live past six months. Fortunately, after a pacemaker operation, he was given a new chance at life. He had a kind soul and he and Amber where inseparable. His mother had told Amber that before Jeremiah had met her, it seemed as though he were ready to give up to meet his Master. After she came into his life it was as if he had the will to live again. Jeremiah showed Amber everyday, even though his heart was defected, with Christ residing there, it was perfect. However, eventually Jeremiah’s heart could no longer be helped by his pacemaker and he went home to be with his Savior.
After his death, Amber’s heart was shattered like a window, broken by a stone thrown into its center. She was angry at her Mother for ever walking through the doors of that church. Amber grew more rebellious as she came upon her teenage years. She had so much rage toward her Mother and was very angry with God. She began to do things that were an abomination in His eyes. Her Mother finally had to ask Amber to leave. She had chosen a lifestyle that broke the hearts of her Mother, her church family, and God himself. She fell much deeper into sin with each passing day. Yet she had never forgotten Jeremiah and his heart. She often thought of what Jeremiah would think of her if he could see her now. Somehow that condemned her. At the time she was not concerned with what God thought of her sin, but what Jeremiah would think. Although Amber no longer lived with her Mother, she made it very clear to her that she was still loved by all her family. Oftentimes before, she had wondered how they could still love her with all she had done………
The day has finally come and Amber realizes that God loves her and longs to forgive her of her sins. That is why she is standing outside the doors of this small church. She has called her Mother and her church family, and inside they are gathered awaiting Amber’s arrival. She remembers her Mother’s decision that changed her life and now she is ready to make hers. She can feel the presence of God, and Jeremiah, as she enters through these doors. Finally after all this time she is ready to give God her defected heart and receive a heart as perfect as her dear friend, Jeremiah.
