Queretaro, Mexico. I was three weeks into a six week mission at a childrens’ home. I had left behind every person I knew, my apartment and my job to try to discover if this was where God wanted me in life. I was spending a Saturday afternoon with a couple of other young women who were on much the same endeavor as I. None of us had met before beginning this adventure but we were excited to be sharing it with one another.
This was our first time out exploring the city on our own. We missed our stop on the bus line and had to walk a long way back to the center of town. By the time we got there we really needed some lunch. We found a little restaurant that served hamburgers and decided to try it. We squeezed into the small lobby, ordered and then climbed single file up a small steep wooden staircase over on our right to the cutest, coziest seating area I’ve ever seen. The walls were brightly painted and had a variety of photos and pictures neatly arranged on them. One wall was taken up by the staircase and each of the three remaining walls contained two booths. A couple tables were placed in the center. We settled into a booth and examined the foreign condiments while we anxiously awaited our burgers. Soon we were looking at three huge hamburgers that didn’t look like any burgers I’d ever seen in the U.S. They were loaded with cheese, ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomato and onion as well as guacamole and what I swore was a fried egg! We offered thanks for the meal and then curiously bit in. My eyes closed and a small moan escaped my lips. Sheer bliss.
A couple weeks later we were shopping the markets in a different area of the city. Once again we found a small restaurant. It was smaller and not quite as well kept but we ordered burgers anyway, dearly hoping for something similar to the burgers at the first restaurant. When we got our meals we again had a prayer and excitedly bit into them. Disappointment soon followed. They were okay but not as good as the burgers from the other restaurant. “Oh well!” we thought. The meal still satisfied our stomachs. However, the next morning, I was beginning to regret the decision to eat that burger. I was sick. Very sick. In fact, it took six days, a trip to a kind Mexican doctor who told me I had a bacterial infection and a stop at the local pharmacy before I was back to being myself again.
If I ever get the chance to return, I will definitely have another hamburger but I will be wiser about where I order it from!
