A certain chocolate Lab I occasionally take care of, loves biscuits. One look at
him and you’d think the last thing he needs is a biscuit. True, he is a bit rotund,
But he’s a real tail wagger. I suspect I give him more biscuits than his owners do,
but he’s happy.
When he goes out to lie in the grass, or to do his business, sometimes the housecat
will accompany him. When the dog is ready to come back in, he expects to receive
a biscuit. I thought I had trained him well. In reality, it’s the other way around.
The cookie jar sits on a windowsill near the front door. This jar has a dog head top
that barks when it’s lifted up. Thankfully the barking has gotten more muted with time.
After my canine friend comes indoors, he immediately stands, or actually dances,
facing the biscuit jar in anticipation. He totally enjoys each one he gets. One biscuit
every time he comes inside.
Sometimes the dog will accompany me to the door when I let in the cat. This one time
the cat dashes past both of us. I look at the dog, who is dancing. I crack up.
“No, it doesn’t work that way. You don’t get a biscuit when the CAT comes in!” I say,
giggling.
He tries this trick on me when I walk in the door too. I think it’s time for retraining
one of us.

Nice story.
(and I know just what you mean about that noisy jar!)
