LATE FOR CHURCH

“Hurry up,” I told the stopped car in front of me, “I’m late for church.”

There were several boys on bikes. #1, appeared to be about 8 years old and he used the crosswalk to the other side easily. #2, was the oldest, probably 12, but with a bike that was smaller than his years. He had baggy pants, and chains from his pockets, studs on his clothes, earrings, and had the look of being tough and hard as nails. He too rode to the other side.

#3 crosser hesitated as if he couldn’t decide whether or not to proceed. The car in front of me continued to wait and now I was getting more impatient. #3 got his front wheel into the crosswalk, then the back as he came off the curb. He was about 7 and kept looking back, then got off his bike and got both himself and his bike back onto the sidewalk.

We were all still stopped and since I could do nothing to improve my being late, I started to relax in the moment and wonder how God would show Himself outside his church.

Now #3 started walking his bike back up the sidewalk towards #4 who was about 6 years old. He had an even smaller bike with training wheels. As #3 approached #4 and tried to turn around they kind of all got tangled together. #2, Mr. Hard as Nails, walked back across the street, helped #3 and #4 get untangled, set #3’s bike back into the crosswalk, and gave him a push. He got #4’s bike down the curb and headed in the right direction and walked across with #4 on his bike with training wheels and finally all four were on the other side.

What I saw in all this was a glimpse of #2, Mr. Hard as Nails, heart. He really was #2 Mr. Kindness of Heart.
And Mrs. Hard as Nails impatient heart turned to Mrs. Softness of Heart, and she realized in this moment, there was no such thing as being late for church.
