Hanging up the telephone Christine joyfully thanked the Lord for the beginning of an answered prayer. It had been months since she had seen or heard from her son Nathan. A few weeks after his eighteenth birthday he packed his belongings and headed out the door. He had rebelled against everything she had tried to instill in him. He didn’t want anything to do with the church or God for that matter. He wanted to live his own life without a bunch of rules. Heartbroken, Christine knew she had to let him go. She spent hours on her knees in intense, fervent prayer for her son every day. Now, nearly six months later he called to ask if he could stop by. He had said that he needed to talk to her. Anxious to see him she readily agreed.
The minute Christine opened the door and saw Nathan standing there she could hardly contain herself. She was so relieved and overjoyed to see him. Fighting the urge to reach out and gather him in her arms like she always did when he was a little boy she invited him in. “Come in honey; it’s so good to see you.” Feeling ashamed because of the pain he knew he must have put his mother through he looked down at his feet. “Thanks Mom,” he sheepishly answered and followed her to the couch. After looking into his mother’s face and seeing only love and forgiveness in her eyes he buried his face in his hands and began sobbing uncontrollably. “Mom, I’m so sorry.” With unchecked tears spilling down her face Christine leaned over to her son and wrapped her arms around him. “ Honey, I forgave you the day you walked out. A day hasn’t gone by that I wasn’t on my knees praying for you.” Nathan looked at his mother feeling so relieved that she had forgiven him. “ Mom, I was wrong. It took me a long time to see it but I know now I was wrong. I spent all those months living in misery thinking I could live my own life without God and you or anyone telling me what I should do or how to live. A few days ago I went to see Pastor Joe. Mom, he made me see that I would never be happy or free until I gave my heart and life to Jesus. I want you to know I did. Mom, I gave my heart and life to Jesus!” Christine’s heart overflowed with joy and thankfulness. “ Oh Nathan, I’m so happy for you son.” In her heart she praised God and silently thanked Him for saving her son and bringing such a gracious end to their heart-rending ordeal.
