Previous Challenge Entry (Level 1 – Beginner)
Topic: Hot and Cold (04/09/09)
A dreary rain drop stings my cheek. I shrug deeper into my leather jacket as I dash to the car. As I round the corner of the house I am assaulted by a gale from the north. Fumbling to hold my hat on with one hand, clutch my Bible with the other and open the car door with—what? I hit my head as I bound into the protection of the Chrysler.

Argh! Okay, now my mood is not only dismal, but really bad! Not a good way to begin a Sunday morning, I reflect. I rub the blossoming goose egg on my temple and survey the melancholy landscape as I wait for my husband to find his way out to join me.

Was it just yesterday that I was sinking my fingers into the rich black earth of our garden plot, enjoying the solar rays that seemed to caress my skin? Ah, fickle April! Pleasing one day and teasing the next! I can’t wait to trade your company for that of generous, constant June.

With embarrassment I realize that “April” could be my spiritual name: so often I have left a Sunday morning service aflame with enthusiasm to serve my Lord, aglow with a warmth of compassion for humankind, only to have my fire dim to an ember within a few hours. In fact some days it quickly chills to a glaze of ice if things don’t go my way.

Humbled, I bow my head. Looking deep within myself I find the little spark of God’s love and lift it up to Him. “Please fan this spark back to life, Lord, and I will try to guard the flame today and feed it with the fuel of your Word. I am determined not to be an ‘April’s child’.”

I appreciate the analogy you used of April's inconsistent weather to our inconsistency as people in our relationship with God.

Hi Miriam. I just wanted to leave a quick note to let you know your entry, "April's Child," actually did very well in the Hot and Cold Challenge. Although you didn't receive an award, you made it into the Highest Rankings for Level 1, placing 7th in that Level. There were a lot of entries this week, and competition in Level 1 is always very intense, so well done.
