My assignment is finished! The struggle to complete it is over and I have handed in my paper. Now I must wait to see if it will receive the coveted first place. I think I have done well. I have done my best, but no doubt so have the rest of the class — each one striving for excellence.
The assignment: to write an essay about Canada not exceeding three hundred words.
At first it seemed an impossible task. Canada is the second largest country in the world and to write about it in a few words would not do it justice or give much information.
But the assignment had been given and I had to set about meeting it. It took me quite a while, but I reached the deadline. This is what I wrote:
‘Canada is a very large country, bigger than the U.S.A. In fact it is the second largest country in the world. You don’t hear about it as you do of the bustling noisy U.S.A., which is known world-wide and whose soldiers are on the battlefield in several countries. It does not often hit the headlines, but yet it plays an important part in the world’s economy. By and large it is a very peaceful nation, and a large percentage of the population is from immigrants.
‘One unusual aspect of the population is the province of Quebec, which is predominantly French, and where the French language is spoken. Many years ago, when Britain conquered the French, the French settlers were allowed to remain and to retain their own language.
‘There are vast areas of land, which are very fertile and where wheat is grown. Other areas are covered with forests, which provide timber, furniture and paper industries. There are vast mineral resources in the west, and oil and natural gas. Fishing also plays a very important role in the country’s economy.
‘Canada can be called a very clean country, and most of its cities can be termed beautiful.
‘The climate is generally on the cool side, but is tolerable. In the north, however, which stretches into the Arctic Ocean, it is extremely cold and snow can be seen for most of the year. For those who love skiing or snowboarding the north is the place to go.
‘There are many tourist attractions, not least being the Niagara Falls, the Canadian Rockies and some of the Great Lakes.
‘Canada is a member of the British Empire and Commonwealth and the British Queen reigns as monarch of Canada, but the country is completely independent and self-governing.
‘Canada — large, peaceful, industrious and beautiful!’
Worthy of merit? I trust so. What do you think?
