As the song America the Beautiful states, “Oh beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountains’ majesty, above the fruited plain…” Coast to coast, north, south, east, and west, this land is a vast and strikingly diverse hunk of terra firma. For any who have been fortunate enough to travel it, as I have, you have enjoyed the visual pleasures of that diversity. Beyond the land itself, though, are the people, just as diverse and just as beautiful. All people have disagreements, rivalries, and a myriad of emotional complications, as we have often seen and experienced in the USA. When it comes right down to it, how have we survived?
Survival comes in the form of faith. Faith in ourselves, faith in this land we call home and faith in our heavenly father. It is only through faith that we are given grace. It is that compassion and mercy handed to us from the father through the son that lifts us up beyond the reaches of all that wants to bring us down.
Throughout our history, we have proven our resilience. Time and again we have bounced back from unthinkable injustice, wars, depressions, and inept leadership. More than faith in one another, many of us turn to our faith in a higher power. With a promise of life ever lasting, we work daily to live according to the Word. One by one we add our lives to the mix and hope it is enough. As the song concludes, “America! America! God shed his grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.”
