The theme that threads itself throughout the history of man’s relationship with our awesome Creator is love! Man (Adam) was birthed out of Jehovah’s desire to have relationship with someone that retained a free will with the capability of not only recognizing love but the ability of returning love.
With all the discussion and debate of whether Christians should decorate a tree or not, we, who have relationship with God, are not phased by the do’s and don’ts of rituals. We find significance in the Star at the top of the tree reminds us of the star that led the wise men to the stable where the Saviour was born. It sits high atop the tree and reminds us of the scripture that says, “If I be lifted up, I’ll draw all men unto me.” The lights represent the fact that Jesus is the light of the world. The branches of the tree lift gracefully wide, reminding us “whosoever will let him come!” Christ came that we all might have life, and has it more abundantly. The gifts that sit under the tree reminds us that “… God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16). On the acceptance of the Father’s gift of His Son we gain everlasting life!
When I light my tree and see the glow of its lights reflected in the eyes and faces of my five grandchildren, I then tell them about the wonderful story of Jesus’ birth. That a woman named Mary loved her God so that she was willing to be a vessel that would bear the Son of God. She looked past the fact that she could become the subject of ridicule and mockery since Joseph, to whom she was engaged, might not accept that she was with child. How Joseph, moved by love, submitted to the Holy Ghost and became Mary’s husband and became an important instrument in the plan of God!
God’s gift of love has made it possible for everyone to give a gift whether you have finances or not! Whether you are near or far! Love is a gift that lasts a lifetime! Understanding this, my family celebrates Christmas throughout the year. With every expression of love we relive the Reason for the Season of Christmas!
