Topic: The Reason for the Season of Christmas (12/04/08)
It does make me sad when stores or people go out of their way to avoid the word "Christ", yet a judgemental attitude is not the godly response. Those offended by Jesus cannot be expected to understand "Merry Christmas". Condemning those not ready to believe in Christ because they refuse to say "Christmas" is not how Jesus wants us to treat the world. Things of God are foolishness to the unbeliever (I Corinthians 2:14). When someone is offended because of our Christianity, that is an opportunity to pray for them.

Christ brings incredible love and forgiveness to anyone that will accept it. Along with this salvation offered is the realization and conviction that I am just a sinner in need of a Savior. Many on this earth, including Christians, aren't fond of conviction. Conviction calls for humility and change. Maybe "Merry Christmas" offends those who don't know Christ because they're not ready to be reconciled to Him. Maybe "Merry Christmas" offends because of the Christians saying it...

I am humbled to have the privilege of saying "Merry Christmas". I am humbled to be able to speak of the Christ that died for me to a world in need of Him. I will say "Merry Christmas" for the rest of my life because I love celebrating my Lord. I will not say it because it's the right thing to say. Having pride in understanding Christmas will not point anyone to the Reason for the Season...knowing and following Christ means sharing Him with others. Having high expectations of the lost of this world will only bring disappointment. Have high expectations of Jesus and He will deliver every time. Let us truly celebrate all year this Jesus that know our names without forcing His on others (there is a difference between forcing and sharing). Free will was given to us by a holy God for a purpose. I have the freedom to know Christ, to explore Him, trust Him and to share Him. I pray many will come to know Him because "Merry Christmas" shines from within us all year long.

I find this essay very refreshing. I'm disturbed by the very disdainful and superior attitudes displayed by Christians about this issue. There's even a song "Christmas with a capital C" in which the performers have what I feel is a mocking attitude toward people or stores that don't say "Merry Christmas." It's just wrong.

And yet--Merry Christmas to you, dear writer! I'm proud to say it, too.
